The upgrade edition of Microsoft Office for Mac v4.x (and probably other versions) requires a product to upgrade from. If the original product disks have been lost you will no longer be able to install the upgrade edition. This note describes how to get around this.

The Office 4.x installer doesnt require a previous product to be installed - it only needs to see the first install disk for the product. As a way of fixing some bugs in Microsoft Works for Mac v3 they just released a new install disk 1. This disk may be found in the microsoft software library on ftp.microsoft.com. The Office 4.x installer will accept this revised Works 3 install disk as proof of ownership of a previous product from which you may upgrade. All you have to do is download the disk image, write it to disk and insert it when Office 4.x setup asks for it.
