I have no idea at all what this thing is. It appears to be of German origin and I believe the small green charts I have go with this. It came with two brass drums. Because I have no idea what this thing does, I have removed the gear-and-pole that the drum attaches to and put it in the Casella rain gauge whose drum kept stalling. This means the brass drum shown here is really just a spare drum for the rain gauge. This thing also uses an unusual pen as can be seen in the second photo. It is a Type 1517 and also says "Tau 0-5" on its nameplate.

inside pen A good view of the unusual pen but sadly not of what this thing does. |

underside In the center on the left is the catch for the cover. Opposite it (on the other side of the two screws) is a little cap which screws over a hole that goes into the chamber visible in the second photo. The cap has a rubber seal in it to stop it leaking wha |

drum top This was a spare drum for this instrument but now it is a spare drum for the Casella rain gauge. |
