Type 1517

I have no idea at all what this thing is. It appears to be of German origin and I believe the small green charts I have go with this. It came with two brass drums. Because I have no idea what this thing does, I have removed the gear-and-pole that the drum attaches to and put it in the Casella rain gauge whose drum kept stalling. This means the brass drum shown here is really just a spare drum for the rain gauge. This thing also uses an unusual pen as can be seen in the second photo. It is a Type 1517 and also says "Tau 0-5" on its nameplate.

A good view of the unusual pen but sadly not of what this thing does.
underside
In the center on the left is the catch for the cover. Opposite it (on the other side of the two screws) is a little cap which screws over a hole that goes into the chamber visible in the second photo. The cap has a rubber seal in it to stop it leaking wha
drum top
This was a spare drum for this instrument but now it is a spare drum for the Casella rain gauge.
