HOW2LOAD.TXT V1.1 Introduction ------------ This file contains instructions and examples for loading new firmware into each DEChub device that provides network firmware upgrade capability. In addition, instructions for accessing online release notes, RFCs and MIBs on the Internet are provided. A separate section is provided for each device. Any special conditions for loading a specific device can be found in the section for that device. In each section there is a reference to "the Internet directory." This directory can be accessed via Digital's Internet ftp server at ftp.digital.com (16.1.0.2). See the section "Accessing Online Information" for a description of a variety of ways to access the Internet directory. There are four directories of interest. The "mibs" directory contains the latest MIBs (Management Information Base) and RFCs (Request For Comments) supported by the DEChub family of products. The "firmware" directory contains the latest firmware images. The "firmware/ndu" directory contains the DECndu Plus utility. The "release" directory contains the product release notes that accompany the firmware in the "firmware" directory. The contents of each directory is described in detail in the README file found in each directory. Each section also makes reference to the DEChub Consolidated Firmware Kit. This kit, of which this file is a part, contains all the firmware images and product release notes that are located in the "firmware" and "release" subdirectories of the Internet directory. The kit is available as an OpenVMS and MS-DOS installable kit. The network upgrade utility, DECndu Plus, is available as a separately installable kit for both OpenVMS and MS-DOS. Each section provides examples for installing the firmware from both OpenVMS and MS-DOS, except where specifically noted. Where applicable, two examples are given for each platform, one for the case where the community string is the factory default of "public" and another for a different community string (e.g. "engineering"). Note that community strings are case sensitive, and therefore "public" and "PUBLIC" are two very different strings. In all examples, 1.1.1.1 is used as the device "In-Band Interface IP Address." The OpenVMS TFTP server IP address is 2.2.2.2 and the MS-DOS TFTP server IP address is 3.3.3.3. Using One IP Address to Update Network Modules ---------------------------------------------- Only one IP address is required to update all your modules with a new firmware image. When updating a firmware image using the DECndu Plus utility or the product's INSTALLATION MENU, dedicate an IP address as the downline load IP address, then do the following: 1. Assign the dedicated IP address to the first network module you want to update. 2. Perform the update using the DECndu Plus instructions provided in this file or the Setup Port instructions as described in the product release notes. After you complete the firmware update, you must perform two tasks, in the following order: 1. First, you must delete the IP address from the network module. 2. Next, if your load host is using an ARP cache, you must also delete the dedicated IP address from the ARP cache in a manner that conforms to your load host. For OpenVMS running UCX, use the following UCX command: UCX> SET NOARP where is the dedicated downline load IP address. See the "SET ARP" command under UCX help for additional information. After you complete these tasks, update the next network module using the same IP address. CAUTION Failure to delete the dedicated IP address from a network module before assigning it to another network module can result in network problems. Failure to delete the dedicated IP address from the ARP cache can result in a firmware image update to the wrong network module, or multiple updates to a network module with incorrect firmware images. Getting Online Help for DECndu Plus ----------------------------------- Online help is available for DECndu Plus. Once the DECndu Plus kit is installed on your load host, use the following commands to access the online help facility: OpenVMS: $ HELP DOWNLOAD MS-DOS: A:\> decndup /? Accessing Online Information ---------------------------- This section describes how to access online product release notes, public MIBs, Digital's private MIBs, firmware images, and requests for comments (RFCs). To Access... Use... -------------------------------------------------------------- MIBs, release notes, firmware update files, Anonymous ftp and the DECndu Plus Load utility MIBs and release notes ftpmail RFCs Electronic mail --------------------------------------------------------------- Using Anonymous ftp ------------------- You can access any of Digital's DEChub MIBs, firmware update files, release notes, and DECndu Plus Utility over the Internet by using your FTP software. When you use your FTP, you must use include the following parameters: - connect to ftp.digital.com - for a user name, enter anonymous - for a password, enter your Internet mail address, for example: name@system.company.com - change directory to: /pub/DEC/hub900/ (see Table 1 for a list of directory names) Table 1: Directory Names Available Name Contents(1) ---------------------------------------------------- mibs DEChub MIBs firmware DEChub firmware images firmware/ndu DECndu Plus Load Utility release DEChub product release notes ---------------------------------------------------- (1) Digital suggests reading the README file in each directory to understand the contents of that directory. You can also access these directories from the World Wide Web using a browser, such as Mosaic. The Universal Resource Locator (URL) is: file://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/hub900/ The following example shows how to copy a README file. NOTE: User input is case sensitive; you must type it as shown. % ftp ftp.digital.com Connected to ftp.digital.com 220 FTP.DIGITAL.COM FTP Service Process Name: anonymous 331 ANONYMOUS user ok, send real ident as password. Send a mail message to ftpmail@ftp.digital.com. 2. Ignore the subject line. 3. Include the word connect in the first line of the body. 4. Include get commands for each document required, for example: get /pub/DEC/hub900//README (see Table 1 for a list of directory names) 5. quit Requests are acknowledged, then queued and processed every 30 minutes. Because of the number of requests, it may take a day or two before you receive a reply. NOTE: For more timely access, consider using anonymous ftp (refer to the section titled "Using Anonymous ftp"). Using Electronic Mail --------------------- The DDN Network Information Center (NIC) of SRI International provides automated access to NIC documents and information through electronic mail. This is especially useful for people who do not have access to the NIC from a direct Internet link, such as BITNET, CSNET, or UUCP sites. To use the mail service, follow these instructions: 1. Send a mail message to SERVICE@NIC.DDN.MIL. 2. In the SUBJECT field, request the type of service that you want, followed by any needed arguments. Normally the message body is ignored, but if the SUBJECT field is empty, the first line of the message body is taken as the request. The following are example SUBJECT lines to obtain DDN NIC documents: HELP RFC 822 RFC INDEX RFC 1119.PS FYI 1 IETF 1IETF-DESCRIPTION.TXT INTERNET-DRAFTS 1ID-ABSTRACTS.TXT NETINFO DOMAIN-TEMPLATE.TXT SEND RFC: RFC-BY-AUTHOR.TXT SEND IETF/1WG-SUMMARY.TXT SEND INTERNET-DRAFTS/DRAFT-IETF-NETDATA-NETDATA-00.TXT HOST DIIS Requests are processed automatically once a day. Large files are broken down into separate messages. To upgrade the image in Flash from Version 1.0 to Version 2.1 do the following: 1. Prior to upgrading Flash, the following items should be verified and/or changed through the console setup port: o TFTP_TIMEOUT - The default TFTP_TIMEOUT is 10. On a busy network, increase the TFTP_TIMEOUT to 60. If the image will be loaded across a WAN you may want to increase the TFTP_TIMEOUT to 100. To verify the TFTP_TIMEOUT do the following: a. Invoke main menu option [11]. This will put the DECpacketprobe 90 into Command_line mode. b. To verify the TFTP_TIMEOUT type the following: % get TFTP_TIMEOUT c. To change the TFTP_TIMEOUT type the following: % set TFTP_TIMEOUT XXX where XXX is the new value. d. To quit Command_line mode type the following: % Quit o TFTP Server Address - Verify that the DECpacketprobe 90 knows the boot (TFTP) server address. Insure that option [9] on the console main menu indicates the correct address. If the address is incorrect, select option [9] and change as necessary. o Loadable Image - Verify that the loadable image is located within the bootp area of the TFTP server. 2. Start the Flash upgrade process by selecting menu option [10]. NOTE If during the upgrade you receive an "Unsuccessful" message, quit the upgrade, increase the TFTP_TIMEOUT and start over. DO NOT RESET the DECpacketprobe 90. 3. Upon successful completion, exit the upgrade process by pressing . Restart the DECpacketprobe 90 by selecting menu option [12]. Verify that the DECpacketprobe 90 is running from Flash by reading the banner at the top of the screen.
