COMPAQ AV-QD87S-TE February 2002 Dear HSM Customer, In an effort to provide enhanced storage management software ca- pability to our customers, Compaq offers this release of Compaq Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) for OpenVMS[TM] Version V4.0 software. Thank you for your recent purchase of this product. HSM is a layered software product that extends the OpenVMS file system, allowing efficient and cost-effective management of infre- quently accessed (dormant) data. This is accomplished by shelving the data to lower-cost devices and automatically unshelving it when the data is needed. HSM V4.0 provides new features as well as bug fixes. Some of the new features are: o /ELAPSED qualifier for SHELVE/UNSHELVE commands Selects the file for HSM shelving/unshelving activity based on the criterion that the time greater than or equal to the time mentioned with /ELAPSED qualifier has elapsed since the file was subjected to the file event. o /SAVE qualifier for shelve/preshelve commands The /save qualifier when issued with the SHELVE and PRESHELVE DCL commands, will not allow the save sets to span from one tape to another on encountering an end of tape during the shelving operation (i.e continuation volume will not be cre- ated). o Initialization of free volumes Defining the system wide logical HSM$INIT_TAPE will make HSM initialize the tape volume before it starts writing to the tape allocated by MDMS/SLS pool. For details on the bug fixes, please refer to the release notes. HSM for OpenVMS V4.0 software has been designed to run on OpenVMS VAX Versions 6.2, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and on OpenVMS Alpha Versions 6.2, 7.1-2, 7.2-2 and 7.3. The kit you have received is a full release and includes both the VAX and Alpha versions of the software. HSM V4.0 does not utilize the ODS5 disk structure. The kit includes: - HSM for OpenVMS, V4.0 software and documentation - HSM Version 4.0 provides pdf formatted documents as part of the binary kit. - MDMS for OpenVMS, V4.0 software and softcopy release notes. HSM V4.0 can be configured to run in one of two modes, Basic or Plus. If you are using HSM in the Plus mode, you will need to in- stall Media, Device and Management Services (MDMS) unless Archive Backup System (ABS) Version 4.0 software is already present on your system. MDMS is also required to use the tape repacking and backup via shelving features of HSM V4.0. There is no additional charge for Plus mode. Remote access to tape devices in Plus Mode requires Remote De- vice Facility[TM] (RDF). RDF is available in the MDMS savesets of this kit. An RDF license is required. An RDF license is available through the purchase of Archive Backup System or directly from Touch Technologies Inc. HSM V4.0 is qualified to use MDMS V4.0 or MDMS V2.9F for its media manager. RDF V4.3A has been qualified for HSM V4.0. For customers using Storage Library System (SLS) with HSM, we rec- ommend the use of MDMS V2.9F as the media manager. For customers using Archive Backup System (ABS) with HSM, we recommend the use of MDMS V4.0. For HSM customers who are not using either ABS or SLS, we recommend the use of MDMS V4.0 with HSM V4.0.
