          Read Before Installing or Using HP BASIC Version 1.5A
          for OpenVMS Alpha Systems

          This release corrects a problem with the installation of HP
          BASIC on OpenVMS Alpha Systems Version 7.3-2. The installation
          fails if the system definitions library (STARLET) is asked to be
          generated. If it is not requested (which is the default), the
          installation proceeds normally.

          Installation Information

          Installing HP BASIC requires OpenVMS Alpha operating system
          Version 6.2 or higher for the base level product, and Version
          7.1 or higher for IEEE floating data type support.

          The OpenVMS Alpha Layered Products media consists of the follow-
          ing:

          o  The HP BASIC files:

             -  The HP BASIC installation save sets:

                   [BASIC015A.KIT]BASIC015.A,BASIC015.B,BASIC015.C,
                                 BASIC015.D,BASIC015.E,BASIC015.F,
                                 BASIC015.G,BASIC015.H,BASIC015.I

             -  The Compaq BASIC for OpenVMS Alpha Systems Installation
                Guide, the Software Product Description (SPD), and this
                letter in PostScript and ASCII format:

                   [BASIC015A.DOCUMENTATION]*.PS, *.TXT

          o  The Online Documentation Library CD-ROM, which contains BASIC
             documentation files (under the heading "Compaq BASIC for
             OpenVMS Alpha Systems" in the "Programming Languages and
             Tools" section) in HTML format

          Release Notes Information

          The release notes for HP BASIC Version 1.5A for OpenVMS Alpha
          Systems contain general notes, performance hints, a summary
          of known problems, and documentation information. To read the
          release notes before installing HP BASIC, invoke VMSINSTAL
          and follow the instructions in the installation guide. After
          installation of HP BASIC, the release notes are located in:

             SYS$HELP:BASIC015.RELEASE_NOTES and BASIC015_RELEASE_NOTES.PS

          This kit also contains the optionally installable Compaq BASIC
          Translator. Additional information about this software can be
          found in its release notes and in the Compaq BASIC Translator
          User Manual on the Online Documentation Library CD-ROM. After


 






          installation of the Translator, the release notes are located
          in:

             SYS$HELP:DB2VB013.RELEASE_NOTES and DB2VB013_RELEASE_NOTES.PS

          License Management Facility Information

          To install HP BASIC Version 1.5A for OpenVMS Alpha Systems, you
          must first register a License Product Authorization Key (license
          PAK) using the License Management Facility (LMF). See the Compaq
          BASIC for OpenVMS Alpha Systems Installation Guide for licensing
          instructions.

          Contents of the Release

          The release contains the following items:

          o  Media CD-ROM

             The media CD-ROM contains the HP BASIC directory and save
             set, as described in the Installation Information section
             of this letter. For information about installing HP BASIC,
             see the Compaq BASIC for OpenVMS Alpha Systems Installation
             Guide.

          o  CD-ROM User's Guide and Read First Letter

             The Software Product Library CD-ROM User's Guide and a read
             first letter accompany the CD distribution kit. The CD-ROM
             User's Guide lists the directory names provided for each
             product on the Media CD.

          o  Documentation

             HP BASIC documentation is unchanged from the Version 1.5
             release.

             The following HP BASIC manuals are available:

             -  Compaq BASIC for OpenVMS Alpha and VAX Systems Reference
                Manual

             -  Compaq BASIC for OpenVMS Alpha and VAX Systems User Manual

             -  Compaq BASIC for OpenVMS Alpha Systems Installation Guide

             The reference and user manuals are provided on the Online
             Documentation Library CD-ROM. of the CD device. To enable
             access to these files, your system manager should Bookreader
             from a DECwindows terminal or workstation and follow these
             steps:

          o  Invoke Bookreader; the initial or navigation Bookreader
             window appears.

          o  Software Product Description (SPD)

             The SPD provides an overview of the HP BASIC Version 1.5A for
             OpenVMS Alpha Systems product and its features. The SPD is
             provided online in both .PS and .TXT formats.
