COMPAQ AV-QD87P-TE January, 2001 Dear HSM Customer, In an effort to provide enhanced storage management software capa- bility to our customers, Compaq offers this release of Compaq Hi- erarchical Storage Management (HSM) for OpenVMS[TM] Version V3.1A software. Thank you for your recent purchase of this product. HSM is a layered software product that extends the OpenVMS file system, allowing efficient and cost-effective management of infre- quently accessed (dormant) data. This is accomplished by shelving the data to lower-cost devices and automatically unshelving it when the data is needed. HSM V3.1A provides several new features as well as bug fixes. Some of the new features are: o SMU ANALYZE/REPAIR makes changes to the HSM catalog to reflects the new name of files that have been renamed after shelving. o SMU LOCATE command displayed FIDs of files with FID number greater than 65535 erraneously in previous versions of HSM. This display error has been fixed in this version. o Shelving of large number of small files to cache poses perfor- mance problems during cache flush. This version of HSM supports a new system logical HSM$CACHE_FILE_THRESHOLDSIZE which can be defined to any integer. HSM will not allow files smaller than the value assigned to HSM$CACHE_FILE_THRESHOLDSIZE to be shelved to cache. By default this logical is not defined. Users should define this logical only if they want to inhibit small files from being shelved to cache. This implies that in an en- vironment where HSM$CACHE_FILE_THRESHOLDSIZE is defined, to be able to shelve a file, valid archives should be defined for the shelf. o This release contains the fix for IPMT CFS.80685. For more details on these items or the bug fixes, please refer to the release notes. HSM for OpenVMS V3.1A software has been designed to run on OpenVMS VAX Versions 6.2, 7.1, 7.2 and on OpenVMS Alpha Versions 6.2, 7.1, 7.2 and 7.2-1. The kit you have received is a full release and includes both the VAX and Alpha versions of the software. HSM V3.1A does not support the ODS5 disk structure. The kit includes: - HSM for OpenVMS, V3.1A software and documentation - MDMS for OpenVMS, V3.1A software and documentation HSM V3.1A can be configured to run in one of two modes, Basic or Plus. If you are using HSM in the Plus mode, you will need to install Media and Device Management Services (MDMS) unless Archive Backup System (ABS) software is already present on your system. MDMS is also required to use the tape repacking and backup via shelving support features of HSM V3.1A. Remote access to tape devices in Plus Mode requires Remote Device Facility[TM] (RDF). RDF is available through MDMS on the Consoli- dated Software CD-ROM. An RDF license is required. An RDF license is available through the purchase of Archive Backup System or directly from Touch Technologies Inc. HSM V3.1A supports the use of MDMS V3.1A or MDMS V2.9C for its media manager. For customers using Storage Library Systme (SLS) with HSM, we rec- ommend the use of MDMS V2.9D as the media manager. For customers using Archive Backup System (ABS) with HSM, we recommend the use of MDMS V3.1A. For HSM customers who are not using either ABS or SLS, we recommend the use of MDMS V3.1A with HSM V3.1A.
