COMPAQ AV-QD87R-TE August 2001 Dear HSM Customer, In an effort to provide enhanced storage management software capa- bility to our customers, Compaq offers this release of Compaq Hi- erarchical Storage Management (HSM) for OpenVMS[TM] Version V3.2A software. Thank you for your recent purchase of this product. HSM is a layered software product that extends the OpenVMS file system, allowing efficient and cost-effective management of infre- quently accessed (dormant) data. This is accomplished by shelving the data to lower-cost devices and automatically unshelving it when the data is needed. HSM V3.2A provides new features as well bug fixes. Some of the new features are: o HSM$CACHE_RENAME This logical when set to 1 in the system table will allow SMU ANALYZE/RENAME to remove the name descrepancy for files shelved only to cache. o HSM$POLICY_PFQUOTA This logical can be used to specify the page file quota for the detached process created for executing the primary and secondary policy script files. In the absence of this logical HSM uses the system default page file quota as specified in by the system parameter. PQL_DPFLQUOTA. In the following example HSM will set 200000 pages in VAX and 200000 pagelets in ALPHA as the pagefile quota for the newly created process. DEFINE/SYS HSM$POLICY_PFQUOTA 200000. For more details on the bug fixes, please refer to the release notes. HSM for OpenVMS V3.2A software has been designed to run on OpenVMS VAX Versions 6.2, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and on OpenVMS Alpha Versions 6.2, 7.1-2, 7.2-1 and 7.3. The kit you have received is a full release and includes both the VAX and Alpha versions of the software. HSM V3.2A does not utilize the ODS5 disk structure. The kit includes: - HSM for OpenVMS, V3.2A software and documentation - MDMS for OpenVMS, V3.2A software and documentation HSM V3.2A can be configured to run in one of two modes, Basic or Plus. If you are using HSM in the Plus mode, you will need to install Media and Device Management Services (MDMS) unless Archive Backup System (ABS) software is already present on your system. MDMS is also required to use the tape repacking and backup via shelving features of HSM V3.2. There is no additional charge for Plus mode. Remote access to tape devices in Plus Mode requires Remote De- vice Facility[TM] (RDF). RDF is available in the MDMS savesets of this kit. An RDF license is required. An RDF license is available through the purchase of Archive Backup System or directly from Touch Technologies Inc. HSM V3.2A is qualified to use MDMS V3.2A or MDMS V2.9F for its media manager. For customers using Storage Library System (SLS) with HSM, we rec- ommend the use of MDMS V2.9F as the media manager. For customers using Archive Backup System (ABS) with HSM, we recommend the use of MDMS V3.2A. For HSM customers who are not using either ABS or SLS, we recommend the use of MDMS V3.2A with HSM V3.2A. NOTE If you are a DCSC user, you cannot use HSM and DCSC on Fibre Channel. DCSC has chosen not to qualify Fibre Channel on OpenVMS 7.3.
