Software Product Description ___________________________________________________________________ PRODUCT NAME: Compaq Data Transfer SPD 60.54.01 Facility for Tru64 UNIX, Version 1.0A This SPD describes Compaq Data Transfer Facility for Tru64 UNIX, which is available for all Compaq Alpha system platforms. DESCRIPTION Compaq Data Transfer Facility for Tru64 UNIX is a layered software prod- uct that provides data transfer capabilities between IBM OS/390 sys- tems in a Systems Network Architecture (SNA) environment and Compaq nodes running the Compaq Tru64 UNIX Operating System. The Data Transfer Facility for Tru64 UNIX (DTF/DU) software communi- cates with the Mainframe Data Transfer Facility (MDU) software run- ning on the IBM system. Access between the cooperating Compaq and IBM environments is via one of the following products: TCP/IP or DECnet Connections o Compaq SNA Peer Server o Compaq SNA Domain Gateway DECnet Only Connections o Compaq DECnet SNA Gateway for Synchronous Transport o Compaq DECnet SNA Gateway for Channel Transport October 2001 HIGHLIGHTS The following paragraphs briefly highlight the features of DTF for Tru64 UNIX. More detailed information is given in the Features section of this Software Product Description. Ease of Use DTF for Tru64 UNIX provides a familiar user interface for both Com- paq and IBM users. This feature supports easy application development and reduces staff training. Comprehensive, Bidirectional Access The DTF for Tru64 UNIX product enables bidirectional file transfer be- tween Tru64 UNIX and IBM OS/390 systems. Checkpoint and Recovery DTF for Tru64 UNIX provides Tru64 UNIX and IBM users with checkpoint and recovery support in the event of a system or network failure. This feature allows DTF to resume an interrupted recoverable copy opera- tion when the network returns to a normal state. This saves signif- icant time and system resources when large files are transferred. File Backup DTF for Tru64 UNIX allows Tru64 UNIX users to target IBM disks and tapes for backup and restore operations. In large coresident Compaq and IBM sites, this capability optimizes system resource usage. Users have the ability to include an allocation space qualifier when backing up files to target IBM disks to ensure proper disk space availability. Remote Job Submission DTF for Tru64 UNIX users can submit jobs remotely from all Tru64 sys- tems. Post-Processing 2 Using DTF for Tru64 UNIX, Tru64 UNIX and IBM users can provide a post- processing file to be executed after a file transfer is completed. This feature allows Tru64 UNIX and IBM users to logically connect the run- ning of a batch job to the successful completion of a DTF file trans- fer. This makes the implementation of distributed processing functions significantly easier to synchronize between IBM applications and Tru64 UNIX applications. Supported File Types DTF for Tru64 UNIX supports multiple file types on the IBM system (se- quential, partioned, VSAM). This support permits Tru64 UNIX users to create sequential or partioned files on the mainframe. The Tru64 UNIX user can also create files on OS/390 tapes. HSM Support DTF for Tru64 UNIX supports IBM's Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) facility. IBM Enterprise Architecture and SMS Support DTF for Tru64 UNIX runs in compliance with IBM's Enterprise Architec- ture and will support SMS-managed data sets (refer to the Supported IBM Configurations section of this Software Product Description). Data Translation Using Load Balancing and Performance Tuning DTF for Tru64 UNIX supports text translation from Compaq DMCS (Dig- ital Multinational Character Set, a superset of ASCII) to EBCDIC and vice versa on a record-by-record basis. DTF for Tru64 UNIX supports load balancing and performance tuning between the IBM system and the Tru64 UNIX node by allowing users to select which system performs the text translation. Data Security DTF for Tru64 UNIX controls access and protects valuable data with su- perior security capabilities. The mainframe component supports the industry- standard SAF security interface that runs on IBM machines. 3 Proxy access to the IBM system allows Tru64 UNIX users to access the OS/390 system without IBM userids and passwords flowing over the net- work connections. Event Logging The mainframe component logs events which can be used for historical inquiry or accounting. Components There are two components to the Compaq Data Transfer Facility for Tru64 UNIX Version 1.0A product: o Data Transfer Facility for Tru64 UNIX (DTF/DU) Version 1.0A o Mainframe Data Transfer Facility (MDU) Version 3.2 Data Transfer Facility for Tru64 UNIX Data Trasfer Facility for Tru64 UNIX (DTF/DU) is a layered software product that operates on Compaq Alpha systems running the Compaq Tru64 UNIX operating system. DTF/DU acts as an accessor file system perform- ing file transfer with checkpoint/recovery capability. DTF/DU has the capability of printing local files on an IBM JES2/3 sys- tem as well as submitting jobs for execution on a remote IBM system. The customer needs one or more DTF/DU licenses for each Tru64 UNIX sys- tem performing simultaneous file transfer operations to an IBM main- frame. The customer selects TCP/IP or DECnet depending on the gateway con- figuration. DTF/DU can also be installed with the Compaq SNA Peer Server to perform the file transfer to and from the mainframe. DTF/DU extends Tru64 UNIX network file access to include standard IBM OS/390 files residing on an IBM mainframe. This software interoper- ates with Mainframe DTF (MDU). Mainframe Data Transfer Facility 4 Mainframe DTF (MDU) is a layered software product that operates on an IBM mainframe. The Mainframe DTF (MDU) software is supported on all hardware running OS/390 in 31-bit mode including zSeries servers. MDU software is not currently supported under OS/390 in 64-bit mode or un- der zOS. MDU acts as an accessed file system, thus extending Tru64 UNIX net- work file access to include standard IBM OS/390 sequential and VSAM files residing on a mainframe. The MDU software can also be used to communicate with Compaq OpenVMS Systems. Refer to the Compaq Data Transfer Facility for OpenVMS Soft- ware Product Description 27.85.xx. Configuration The MDU component must be installed on each IBM system with which users want to communicate. The UNIX network requires the DTF/DU component to be installed on each Tru64 UNIX system that is communicating with the IBM system. FEATURES Ease of Use The DTF for Tru64 UNIX product uses a variety of familiar user inter- faces to make users more productive. Users do not have to learn new commands and procedures. Tru64 UNIX users use the familiar UNIX command line interface for data exchange between Tru64 UNIX and IBM systems. Use of STDIN/STDOUT per- mits the use of UNIX pipes during transfer operations. IBM users can access and transfer data by using the TSO DTF command processor, the TSO ISPF panels, or the single-line interface. The TSO command processor can also be invoked in batch mode. DTF Access from Tru64 UNIX Clients 5 Tru64 UNIX users can initiate non-recoverable or recoverable, bidi- rectional file transfers between MDU and themselves. DTF/DU supports the following file transfer operations with the associated commands. dtfui Copy a UNIX Supports input for STDIN file to the IBM system dtfiu Copy an OS/390 Supports writing to STDOUT file to the UNIX system dtfls Issue remote ls Supports wildcards of an OS/390 file dtfrm Remove an OS/390 file for the OS/390 system dtfsb Submit OS/390- resident JCL to JES2 for execution dtfpr Print an OS/390-resident file on a main- frame printer DTF Access from OS/390 IBM users can initiate non-recoverable or recoverable dibdirectional file transfers between Tru64 UNIX clients and themselves. OS/390 TSO users have the following commands available to transfer files to or from other DTF clients. o MDUSEND o MDURECV o DTFRESUM 6 o DTF command processor o DTF ISPF panels Checkpoint and Recovery Checkpoint and recovery capabilities ensure that data remains accu- rate and intact, even in the event of system or network failure. When Tru64 UNIX users transfer files using the checkpointing feature, the product automatically resumes an interrupted file-transfer pro- cess with no loss of data when communications between sending and re- ceiving systems is reestablished. Checkpoint and recovery is supported for non-VSAM that are disk or tape resident. Checkpoint and recovery is not supported on VSAM files. IBM users have a similar checkpoint and recovery feature. A recover- able copy operation performed from an IBM system sets environment vari- ables (CLIST in OS/390). If the transfer terminates with a network er- ror, these variables contain information to allow the user to resume the transfer. File Backup DTF/DU allows Tru64 UNIX users to back up and restore their disks di- rectly to IBM tapes or disks using TAR and DD commands. Output from these UNIX utilities is piped to the dtfui command input stream. Users have the ability to include an allocation space qualifier when back- ing up files to target IBM disks to ensure proper disk space avail- ability. Remote Job Submission Tru64 UNIX users can submit JCL files to be executed on the IBM sys- tem. These users can use the dtfsb command to initiate the job sub- mission. Users will not get the status of the job completion. IBM users can submit jobs by using the post-processing feature described in the next section. Post-Processing 7 Post-processing is the ability to submit a script or OS/390 JCL pro- cedure after a file transfer is completed. IBM users can use the post- processing feature from either the command processor or the panel in- terface. Tru64 UNIX users can use the post-processing by specifying the POST option in the transfer request. Supported File Types All files copied to Tru64 UNIX systems result in stream files. For IBM OS/390 systems, supported non-VSAM file types are those with the physical sequential data set organization. This includes sequen- tial files as well as partitioned data set members. Both disk-resident and tape-resident non-VSAM files are supported. Supported VSAM file types include entry-sequenced data sets (ESDS), relative-record data sets (RRDS), and key-sequenced data sets (KSDS). HSM Support MDU supports the Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) facility and allows users to recall migrated data sets. IBM system programmers can tailor the number of concurrent outstanding HSM requests as well as device recall capability. SMS Support MDU supports the OS/390 Storage Management Subsystem (SMS) facility. Data Translation DTF for Tru64 UNIX provides three options for data translation: no data translation at all, Compaq DMCS (Digital Multinational Character Set, a superset of ASCII) to EBCDIC and vice versa, and field-level trans- lation. o By default, data translation is performed from DMCS to EBCDIC and vice versa on a record-by-record basis. This is the option normally used to transfer text files. 8 o Users can elect not to perform translation on a pre-transfer ba- sis. By default, data translation is performed on the Tru64 UNIX node. To decrease the load on the Tru64 UNIX system, the product installer man- ager can optionally specify that data translation (DMCS/EBCDIC) oc- cur on the IBM system by MDU. Data Security Files on the IBM system are accessible only to Compaq users with valid access control information. MDU provides a standard user exit for se- curity mechanisms through the System Authorization Facility (SAF) in- terface. For Tru64 UNIX systems, security is maintained by using the standard file protection mechanism provided by the base operating sys- tem. MDU also allows proxy information to be stored on the IBM system us- ing standard IBM system security packages. For ease of use, the proxy information allows Tru64 UNIX users to per- form file transfers without having to provide passwords for their files located on the IBM system. Event Logging MDU logs events which can be used for historical inquiry or for ac- counting usage. Historical logging can be used to characterize the use of MDU. Such information is necessary for decisions involving oper- ating hours, performance tuning, and load analysis of the network and operating system. Account logging allows users of MDU functions to be recorded along with the resources they consume. The granularity of the information is sufficient to provide a bill-back capability. Imple- mentation of the accounting and billing capability is handled with a user exit and can be customized on a per-site basis. 9 INSTALLATION Installation services from Compaq are recommended for a customer's first purchase of this software product.
