The sample installation shown below took about five minutes. STEP 1: Log in to the system account. Username: SYSTEM Password: Welcome to OpenVMS AXP (TM) Operating System, Version V6.1 on node PDP12 Last interactive login on Thursday, 14-JUL-1994 12:41:08.54 Last non-interactive login on Thursday, 14-JUL-1994 12:41:34.11 STEP 2: Define the logical location of the SoftWindows installation kit. In the following example, the SoftWindows kit is located on node HADLEY::DKA300:[INSIGNIA]. The kit may reside on other media, such as CD or Tape. 1-1 Define the logical name, PCSI$SOURCE, to point to the kit location: $ DEFINE PCSI$SOURCE HADLEY::DKA300:[INSIGNIA] STEP 3: Perform the installation. Use the OpenVMS Polycenter Software Installation utility that you invoke with the DCL command, PRODUCT. Include the /HELP qualifier to display information and option choices that pertain to the installation. The DCL command, HELP PRODUCT, is available to provide information about available options. Accepting all option defaults produces a successful installation. Choose the defaults or other options you prefer. Enter the following command: $ PRODUCT INSTALL SOFTWIN/HELP The following product has been selected: DEC AXPVMS SOFTWIN V1.0 Do you want to continue? [YES] yes *** DEC AXPVMS SOFTWIN V1.0: PC emulator for OpenVMS Requires from 38774 to 66545 disk blocks depending upon configuration. SoftWindows V1.0 is an OpenVMS layered product that supplies a full MS-Windows and DOS emulator. Do you want all the default values for this product? [YES] yes Note 1: SoftWindows requires MOTIF V1.2-2 or later to be installed. Note 2: SoftWindows takes about 5 minutes to install Do you want to view the values? You have now installed SoftWindows. You should now do two things. Execute @SYS$STARTUP:SOFTWIN$STARTUP.COM to make startup commands known to the system immediately and add the following line in SYS$MANAGER:SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM: @SYS$STARTUP:SOFTWIN$STARTUP.COM Now log out and log back into your computer under the system account to accomplish the final phase. In order to set up the correct keyboard - you should now type @SOFTWIN$SYSTEM:CONFIGURE When asked about a missing 'swinconfig.ini file' - chose the default option. Users will not be able to use SoftWindows until this is completed. $ STEP 4: Select the default keyboard type by executing the following command: $ @SOFTWIN$SYSTEM:CONFIGURE That command produces the following installation script: Select the default keyboard type you are going to be using when running SoftWindows. For LK401 (or 201) style keyboards - Enter: 1. for US/UK keyboard 2. for French keyboard 3. for German keyboard 1-3 For PCXAL (PC) style keyboards - Enter: 4. for US keyboard 5. for UK keyboard 6. for French keyboard 7. for German keyboard Enter a value from the list above [1] Pressing Return at the last query selects the US/UK keyboard. Press Return or select an option you prefer. Upon selecting the default keyboard, SoftWindows applies your your configuration changes to the default hard disk container file. Because Softwindows must start this operation without the configuration information, it senses and notifies you of a (nonreal) error and prints a warning message. Simply select the default in response to the warning message. SoftWindows runs, the correct keyboard information is loaded, and SoftWindows exits. Installation is complete. 1-4
