Release Notes Release notes for the Advanced File System (AdvFS) Utilities are included on the DIGITAL UNIX associated products CD-ROM. DIGITAL strongly recommends that you read the release notes before using this product. The release notes call out new features in this release, identify problems resolved since the last release and known problems in this release, and provide information on errors in the documentation. Release notes are available in two locations: o In the AdvFS Utilities documentation directory on the distribution CD-ROM. The release notes are provided in both ASCII and PostScript[R] format in the /doc/ps and /doc/txt directories. See the documentation that came with your CD for information on locating and printing these files. o In the software kit. The release notes are available in both ASCII and PostScript format after you install the software kit. The AFA425_RELNOTES.TXT text file and AFA425_RELNOTES.PS PostScript file are located in the /usr/advfs directory. Installation Overview There are two methods of installing the AdvFS Utilities software and reference pages: o Locally, from a CD-ROM optical disc that is mounted on your system. o Remotely, from a Remote Installation Service (RIS) server. A RIS server can be any DIGITAL-supported processor running ULTRIX[TM] or the DIGITAL UNIX operating system. If you expect to install the AdvFS Utilities from a RIS server, you need to know the name of the server and who maintains the RIS areas on the server. Before you begin a RIS installation, confirm the following: - The AdvFS Utilities kit is available for remote installation. - Your system is registered as a RIS client. See the DIGITAL UNIX Guide to Sharing Software on a Local Area Network for more information about setting up a RIS server, adding clients, and providing software kits for remote installation. Installation Requirements This section describes requirements for installing the AdvFS Utilities. Allow approximately 10 minutes to complete this installation procedure. Network activity during a remote installation can increase the installation procedure time. Back Up Your System Disk Always back up your system disk before installing any software. Use the backup procedures established at your site. For details on performing a system disk backup, see your DIGITAL UNIX documentation. Login Privilege You must be able to log in as the root user on the system where you are installing the AdvFS Utilities. Only when you are logged in as root user do you have sufficient privileges to install the AdvFS Utilities software. Hardware Requirements To perform the installation you need the following hardware: o Software distribution device You need a distribution device that corresponds with the software distribution media. For example, if you have a CD- ROM optical disc software kit, you need an optical disc drive such as an RRD42 or an RRD43. You must know how to load the media supplied with the software distribution kit on the appropriate drive. The documentation for the disc drive you are using explains how to load media. 2 Preparing for the Installation o Terminal You can use either a hardcopy or video terminal to communicate with the operating system and respond to prompts from the installation procedure for the AdvFS Utilities. Software Requirements The AdvFS Utilities Version 4.0D requires DIGITAL UNIX Version 4.0D or higher to be installed. Verify the version of DIGITAL UNIX installed by executing the following command, which will display the name and version of the currently running operating system: % uname -a Additionally, the AdvFS Utilities requires the following DIGITAL UNIX software subset for AdvFS to be loaded on the system where you install the AdvFS Utilities: o OSFADVFS425 To install the Japanese subset, before you install the AdvFS Utilities you must install: o WORLDWIDE425 To install the optional AdvFS Utilities reference pages (manual pages), the following DIGITAL UNIX software subset must be installed on the system where you install the AdvFS Utilities: o OSFDCMT425, which is named Doc. Preparation Tools Perform the following steps to determine whether the preceding DIGITAL UNIX subsets are loaded: 1. Log on to the system as the root user where you plan to install the AdvFS Utilities. 2. Enter the following commands: % setld -i | grep OSFADVFS % setld -i | grep OSFDCMT Check the displayed rows for the relevant subset names and for any related patch names. The word installed appears in a row after the subset identifier code when a subset is loaded. If the word installed does not appear, the subset or patch is not loaded. In this case, you must load the missing DIGITAL UNIX software before installing the AdvFS Utilities. Preparing for the Installation 3 AdvFS Subsets The AdvFS Utilities subset titles are: o Advanced File System Advanced Utilities (AFAADVANCED425) Contains a set of utilities for managing AdvFS. o Advanced File System Graphical User Interface (AFAADVGUI425) Contains the AdvFS graphical user interface and online help files. This subset is optional. o Advanced File System Daemon (AFAADVDAEMON425) Contains the AdvFS daemon. This subset is required by the graphical user interface. o Advanced File System Advanced Utilities Reference Pages (AFAADVMAN425) Contains reference pages for the AdvFS Utilities. This subset is optional. o Advanced File System Japanese Graphical User Interface (AFAJPADVGUI425) Contains the AdvFS graphical user interface and online help files in Japanese. This subset is optional. o Advanced File System Japanese Advanced Utilities Reference Pages (AFAJPADVMAN425) Contains reference pages for the AdvFS Utilities in Japanese. This subset is optional. If you plan to NFS-mount the AdvFS Utilities reference pages from another system, load the reference page subset onto the other system rather than the one where you are currently performing the installation. In this case, do not request the reference page subset during the software installation. You can log in to the system where the DIGITAL UNIX reference pages are installed and load the reference pages subset there after the current installation is complete. Disk Space Requirements The disk space requirements described in this section apply to the disks where you load the AdvFS Utilities subsets. Table 1 lists the disk space requirements for loading and running the AdvFS Utilities software subsets on a DIGITAL UNIX system. 4 Preparing for the Installation Table 1 Disk Space Requirements (kilobytes) Subset / (root) /var /usr AFAADVANCED425 0 0 300 AFAADVMAN425 0 0 100 AFAADVGUI425 30 20 7000 AFAADVDAEMON425 0 50 800 AFAJPADVGUI425 0 1 661 AFAJPADVMAN425 1 0 27 Refer to the disk space requirements table and total the values for each directory, then compare the space required for subsets with the free space currently on the disks where the AdvFS Utilities files will reside. To determine the current amount of free space for a directory path, log in to the system where you plan to install the AdvFS Utilities. Enter the df command to determine total space and free space for the /usr file system: # df -k /usr Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on Usr_domain#usr 396703 328807 28225 92% /usr The previous display indicates that there are 28225 kilobytes free on the file system. Stopping the Installation You can stop the installation procedure at any time by pressing Ctrl/C. However, files installed up to that point are not deleted. You must delete each AdvFS Utilities file manually. Appendix B lists the files that are installed during the installation procedure. Deleting Subsets After installing the AdvFS Utilities, you can delete the subsets by using the setld command with the -d flag. For example, to Preparing for the Installation 5 delete all of the AdvFS Utilities subsets (AFAADVANCED425, AFAADVGUI425, AFAADVMAN425, AFAADVDAEMON425, AFAJPADVGUI425, AFAJPADVMAN425) enter the following command: # setld -d AFAADVANCED425 AFAADVGUI425 AFAADVMAN425 # setld -d AFAADVDAEMON425 AFAJPADVGUI425 AFAJPADVMAN425 You can also delete earlier versions of the AdvFS Utilities, such as AFAADVANCED401, using the setld command. Error Recovery If errors occur during the installation, the system displays failure messages. For example, if the installation fails due to insufficient disk space, the installation procedure displays an error message. Errors can occur during the installation if any of the following conditions exist: o The AdvFS file system is not installed. o The prerequisite software version is incorrect. o The system parameter values for successful installation are insufficient. For descriptions of error messages generated by these conditions, see the DIGITAL UNIX documentation on system messages, recovery procedures, and DIGITAL UNIX software installation. If you are notified that any of these conditions exist, take the appropriate action described in the message. If an error occurs while using the AdvFS Utilities and you believe the error is caused by a problem with the utilities, take one of the following actions: o If you have a basic or DECsupport[TM] Software Agreement, call your Customer Support Center (CSC). The CSC provides telephone support for high-level advisory and remedial assistance. o If you have a Self-Maintenance Software Agreement, you can submit a Software Performance Report (SPR). o If you purchased the AdvFS Utilities within the last 90 days and you think the problem is caused by a software error, you can submit an SPR. If you find an error in the AdvFS Utilities documentation, see the last page in this document for information on how to send us your comments. Be sure to include the section and page number where the error occurs. 6 Preparing for the Installation Chapter 2 Installing the AdvFS Utilities This chapter provides a step-by-step description of the installation procedure. Before you start the installation, read Chapter 1. Starting the Installation Procedure If you are installing the AdvFS Utilities from CD-ROM optical disc, start with the section "Using CD-ROM Consolidated Distribution Media." If you are installing the AdvFS Utilities from a RIS server, start with the section "Using Remote Installation Services." Specify the /mnt directory to be the mount point for the distribution file system on the drive. If your drive is rz4, enter the following command: # mount -r /dev/rz4c /mnt 5. Enter a setld command that specifies the -l (load) function and identifies the directory in the mounted file system where AdvFS Utilities subsets are located. For a DIGITAL UNIX system, the directory location for AdvFS Utilities subsets is /mnt/AdvFS_Advanced_Utilities/kit. For example, enter: # setld -l /mnt/AdvFS_Advanced_Utilities/kit To continue the installation, see the section "Responding to Installation Procedure Prompts." Using Remote Installation Services If you are installing the AdvFS Utilities from a RIS server, start the installation procedure as follows: 1. Log in as the root user on the system where you install the AdvFS Utilities. 2. Enter the following command to ensure that you are at the root (/) directory: # cd / 3. Enter a setld command that specifies the -l(load) function and identifies the system where the AdvFS Utilities are located. For example, if you are loading AdvFS Utilities subsets from a RIS distribution area on node bigsys, enter the following command: # setld -l bigsys: To continue the installation, see the section "Responding to Installation Procedure Prompts." Responding to Installation Procedure Prompts This section explains the installation procedure prompts and displays. Selecting Subsets After you enter the setld command for local installations, the installation procedure displays the names of the AdvFS Utilities subsets and asks you to specify the subsets that you want to load: The subsets listed below are optional: There may be more optional subsets than can be presented on a single screen. If this is the case, you can choose subsets screen by screen or all at once on the last 8 Installing the AdvFS Utilities screen. All of the choices you make will be collected for your confirmation before any subsets are installed. -General Applications: 1) Advanced File System Advanced Utilities Reference Pages 2) Advanced File System Advanced Utilities 3) Advanced File System Daemon 4) Advanced File System Graphical User Interface 5) Advanced File System Japanese Advanced Utilities Reference Pages 6) Advanced File System Japanese Graphical User Interface Or you may choose one of the following options: 7) ALL of the above 8) CANCEL selections and redisplay menus 9) EXIT without installing any subsets Enter your choices or press RETURN to redisplay menus. Choices (for example, 1 2 4-6): 7 If you specify more than one number at the prompt, separate each number with a space, not a comma. Next, the script lets you verify your choice. For example, if you enter 7 in response to the previous prompt, the following verification will be displayed: You are installing the following optional subsets: -General Applications: Advanced File System Advanced Utilities Reference Pages Advanced File System Advanced Utilities Advanced File System Utilities Daemon Advanced File System Graphical User Interface Advanced File System Japanese Advanced Utilities Reference Pages Advanced File System Japanese Graphical User Interface Is this correct? (y/n): If the displayed subsets are not the ones you intended to choose, enter n. In this case, the subset selection menu is again displayed, and you can correct your choice of optional subsets. If the displayed subsets are the ones you want to load, enter y. Monitoring Displays During the Subset Loading Process After you select subsets, the setld utility then loads and verifies each AdvFS Utilities subset. The following example Installing the AdvFS Utilities 9 shows all AdvFS Utilities subsets being loaded from a CD-ROM optical disc to a DIGITAL UNIX system: Checking file system space required to install selected subsets: File system space checked OK. 6 subset(s) will be installed. If the verification process fails, look in the /usr/var/adm/fverify file to find information that can help you diagnose the problem. 12 Installing the AdvFS Utilities Chapter 3 Completing the Installation This chapter describes tasks that complete the installation. The tasks are: o Registering Your Software License o Running the Installation Verification Procedure Registering Your Software License The AdvFS Utilities include support for the DIGITAL UNIX License Management Facility (LMF). A license Product Authorization Key (PAK) must be registered in the License Database (LDB) in order to use the AdvFS Utilities on a newly licensed node. Note that if you are loading a new kit and already entered PAK information for an earlier version, you do not need to register again. To register a license under DIGITAL UNIX, you need the PAK number from the official license agreement. This form was sent separately from the CD-ROM when the software was ordered. Follow these steps to enter your PAK: 1. Log in as the root user. 2. Enter your PAK information with the following command: # lmf register This command places you in a text editor. The default editor is vi. Using the editor, add the license information from the PAK form. 3. After you register your license, use the lmf reset command to copy the license details from the License Database (LDB) to the kernel cache: # lmf reset For complete information on using DIGITAL UNIX LMF, see the lmf(8) reference page. Running the Installation Verification Procedure After installing the AdvFS Utilities, run the Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) independently on both the utilities subset and the graphical user interface subset to verify that the software is available on your system. To run the IVP, you need two disks or disk partitions with at least 20,000 kilobytes each of available disk space. The disks must have disk labels. The IVP will overwrite any existing data on the disk device. To verify the Advanced File System Utilities subset, log in as the root user and enter the following command: # setld -v AFAADVANCED425 To verify the Advanced File System GUI subset, log in as the root user and enter the following command: # setld -v AFAADVGUI425 You might also want to run the IVP after a system failure to be sure that users can access the AdvFS Utilities. Displaying Documentation from CD-ROM The AdvFS Utilities documentation is provided on the DIGITAL UNIX Complementary Products or Layered Products Online Documentation CD-ROM as a PostScript file. A text version is also available. 14 Completing the Installation Appendix A Sample Listing of Installation The following listing shows the AdvFS Utilities installation on a DIGITAL UNIX system using CD-ROM optical disc media.
