Software Product Description ___________________________________________________________________ PRODUCT NAME: DECwindows SNA 3270 Terminal Emulator SPD 62.63.01 for OSF/1®, Version 2.1A DESCRIPTION DECwindows SNA 3270 Terminal Emulator for OSF/1 (DECwindows TE) is a software product that allows users of supported, OSF/1 AXP Worksta- tions and Servers and X Terminals in a DECnet or TCP/IP network to ac- cess and use applications running on an IBM® mainframe. DECwindows TE also provides access to IBM applications for PCs and Apple® Macintosh® computers running Digital's PATHWORKS network operating system. DECwin- dows TE can also run on the same OSF/1 AXP system as the DEC SNA Peer Server, in which case local transport can be used to communicate with the Gateway instead of a network protocol. The product runs in the DECwindows Motif® environment, and communi- cates with IBM host systems through a Digital SNA Gateway or via a TN3270 server. DECwindows TE can access the TN3270 server function in the DEC SNA Peer Server or the TN3270 server implementation in an IBM host. Use of the DECwindows TE is supported on the following systems and en- vironments: o Digital OSF/1 AXP Workstations/Servers o Digital X-Terminal Product Set (VXT 1xxx and VXT 2xxx) o PCs and Macintosh computers within a Digital PATHWORKS network en- vironment. Communicating Between IBM and Digital Systems In normal operation, IBM systems transfer a formatted screen much like a "form" or "panel" to the IBM 3270 block mode terminal. Terminal users fill in required data and the 3270 terminal transmits the completed form to the IBM host as a single unit. In contrast to this "block-mode" approach, Digital terminals and workstations send data to OpenVMS or OSF/1 host systems, one character at a time. Using DECwindows TE en- ables Digital's character-mode terminals to emulate IBM's Block-mode style of computing by buffering outbound IBM data in the DECnet or TCP /IP host system's memory before displaying it, as a single block, on the Digital terminal. The Digital terminal then transmits the screen form to the IBM host system via one of the Digital SNA Gateway prod- ucts or through a TN3270 server. Translating ASCII and EBCDIC Data Digital systems use ASCII code to represent data, while IBM systems use EBCDIC. DECwindows TE contains built-in translation tables that convert ISO Latin character input (given in ASCII code) to IBM multi- national EBCDIC code for transfer through the Digital SNA Gateway soft- ware or a TN3270 server. Users of DECwindows TE can modify these trans- lation tables to fit most language needs. DIGITAL November 1994 AE-Q790A-TE DECwindows SNA 3270 Terminal Emulator SPD 62.63.01 Starting the DECwindows TE Users invoke DECwindows TE from the OSF/1 command line. Command line qualifiers are used to specify the IBM system and system resources to which the user wishes to connect. While the DECwindows TE utility is running, its display window is formatted in the same style as a 3270 display station with the option of 3270, 3279-S3G, 3192-G, 3279-2-E, 3278-2, 3278-3, 3278-4, or 3278-5 terminal types. Exiting DECwindows TE returns control to the OSF/1 Operating System. Transport Selection The user can select the method of transport to the IBM system. The trans- port can be selected either from the OSF/1 command line invoking DECwin- dows TE or in the Connection Parameters screen within the program. The choices are: o TCP/IP - communications between the DECwindows TE system and the Digital SNA Gateway is via TCP/IP. The DEC SNA Peer Server and DEC SNA Domain Gateway V2.0 products support the TCP/IP transport. o DECnet - communications between the DECwindows TE system and the Digital SNA Gateway is via DECnet. o Local - the DECwindows TE software communicates with the DEC SNA Peer Server software running on the same system. o TN3270 - the DECwindows TE system makes a TCP/IP TELNET connection to a TN3270 server. DECwindows TE can access the TN3270 server func- tion in the the DEC SNA Peer Server or the TN3270 server implemen- tation in an IBM OS/400, VM, or MVS host.
