Description DEC SoftWindows 2.0 for Digital UNIX (also called SoftPC version 6) is a software program that allows your Digital workstation or termi- nal to emulate a 486 PC. A PC application functions in the DEC Soft- Windows environment as it functions on an x86, provided that the ap- plication does not require special hardware or a copy-protected diskette. DEC SoftWindows supports MOTIF[R] and the VT220 terminal. This means that DEC SoftWindows can be executed on a Digital UNIX system and dis- played on a VT220 or a local or remote MOTIF display station using an LK201, LK401, LK411 or PCXAL keyboard. DEC SoftWindows supports Novell[R] NetWare[R], LAN Manager, Banyan[R] Vines, the ODI standard, TCP/IP, Winsockets, Microsoft Windows for Work- groups, Pathworks and LAN Workplace for DOS. DEC SoftWindows includes preinstalled Microsoft[R] Windows[R] 3.11 and MS-DOS 6.22. Windows can be run in either standard or enhanced mode. Users can upgrade to Microsoft Windows for Workgroups using the sup- plied script files. The user must supply the distribution of Windows for Workgroups. DEC SoftWindows' performance depends upon various factors as well as the speed of the processor upon which it executes. An Alpha system de- livers compute performance in the 386 to low-end Pentium range for both DOS and Windows applications. Most applications run in the 486-speed range. Applications used with DEC SoftWindows (except those DOS utilities in- cluded with the DEC SoftWindows software) are not Digital licensed, warranted, or supported products. The user must comply with the terms and conditions of each application software license agreement in ef- fect between the user and application supplier. Communications applications may not operate like those on a real PC due to differences in signalling between the Alpha processor and PC processor and the way in which the Alpha processor handles interrupts. Many communications programs do work correctly and it is recommended that these programs be tried before purchasing DEC SoftWindows. The configuration is normally saved automatically at the end of a SoftWindows session. 3 Edit Functions Using the mouse, text can be cut and pasted from the DEC SoftWindows window into the same window, or into a different window. Text can also be cut and pasted between a Motif window and a SoftWindows window. Multiple Sessions A user may operate multiple sessions of DEC SoftWindows on a worksta- tion screen without requiring additional license units. All other use requires one license per session.
