DIGITAL Software Product Description ___________________________________________________________________ PRODUCT NAME: DIGITAL OpenVMS Disk Services for Windows NT Version 1.1 SPD 60.80.01 DESCRIPTION DIGITAL[TM] OpenVMS[TM] Disk Services for Windows NT[TM] allows cus- tomers to store Windows NT data on an OpenVMS Cluster to take advan- tage of the economies of centralized storage and of the failover ca- pabilities of OpenVMS Clusters. OpenVMS Alpha nodes in the cluster serve virtual disks to Windows NT systems. The virtual disk behaves like a locally attached disk, al- though its data is actually stored on a disk in the OpenVMS Cluster. The virtual disk is formatted with a native Windows NT file system, such as NTFS, using standard Windows NT tools. The Windows NT system can share the virtual disk out to user worksta- tions or desktops via the standard Windows NT network sharing mech- anisms. Standby nodes in the OpenVMS Cluster provide automatic failover of disk services. The failover is transparent to Windows NT users accessing the virtual disk; they continue accessing the disk, unaware that a dif- ferent node in the OpenVMS Cluster is serving it. DIGITAL OpenVMS Disk Services for Windows NT has a client component on Windows NT, and a server component on OpenVMS, and uses TCP/IP to communicate between them. If required, multiple network paths can be configured between the client and server components. If one path fails another path is used trans- parently to users accessing the virtual disk. May 1998 DIGITAL OpenVMS Disk Services for Windows NT is an extension to DIG- ITAL's current Windows NT storage alternatives. It is for customers who want to store Windows NT data on OpenVMS Clusters, but who do not need to share files between OpenVMS and Windows NT applications. Open- VMS applications cannot access the data stored on the virtual disk. Customers who need to share data between OpenVMS and Windows NT ap- plications must use PATHWORKS[TM], or other file-sharing solutions. License Management Facility Support This product supports the OpenVMS License Management Facility (LMF). LMF employs a variation of a personal use license to account for spe- cific Windows NT systems that are connected to disk services on an Open- VMS Cluster. Each license allows a single Windows NT system to connect to disk ser- vices on a single OpenVMS Cluster. The license does not limit the num- ber of disk services that the Windows NT system can connect to, and the Windows NT system is not restricted in the number of workstations or desktops it may serve. For more information about the License Management Facility, refer to the OpenVMS Alpha Operating System Software Product Description (SPD 41.87.xx) or the OpenVMS Alpha Operating System documentation. 4 ORDERING INFORMATION ___________________________________________________________________ Order_No_______License_____________________________________________ QL-5TA9A-2B Personal Use License QL-5TA9A-4B____Personal_Use_Update_License_________________________ SOFTWARE PRODUCT SERVICES A variety of service options are available from DIGITAL.
