DIGITAL Software Product Description ________________________________________________________________ PRODUCT NAME: NetWorker Save and Restore SPD 50.98.12 for DIGITAL UNIX, Version 4.4 DESCRIPTION NetWorker Save and Restore for DIGITAL[TM] UNIX[R] provides backup, restore, archive, and hierarchical storage management (HSM) services to a single system or to a group of systems via a TCP/IP network. The NetWorker services each have a different role in storage management: o Backup is a routine system management function that makes copies of data to ensure data availability. o Archive is a system management function that makes permanent copies of data for long-term storage. o HSM automatically migrates files from disk to another storage medium (for later retrieval), based on a set of rules, in order to conserve network storage resources. o Restore retrieves data from backup or archive copies, when needed. The V4.4 release offers a new cluster server feature in TruCluster[TM] environments. The cluster server failover feature enables a NetWorker server to relocate between nodes in a cluster in the event of a system failure. NetWorker cluster server works in concert with TruCluster software to maintain access to NetWorker databases and devices on shared SCSI buses. Features o Industry leading performance for Enterprise-class DIGITAL UNIX systems o Online backups o Heterogeneous client support (DIGITAL UNIX, SunOS[TM], Solaris[R], HP[R]-UX, IBM AIX[R], SGI[R] IRIX[TM], DOS, Macintosh[R], NetWare[R], Windows NT[R], Windows[R], etc.) o Automated operation with proper system configuration, including unattended backup to auto loader and jukebox devices o Auto-media management, including automatic recycling of recyclable volumes, automatic labeling of blank volumes and automated cleaning cartridge support November 1997 NetWorker Save and Restore SPD 50.98.12 for DIGITAL UNIX, Version 4.4 o Easy backup, archive, HSM, restore, retrieve, and fast file location operations by users and administrators o Media management index for tracking media o Simultaneous backup of multiple local and remote file systems to reduce backup time o Simultaneous output to multiple devices o Supports raw disk, file, tape, or optical disk as backup media o Support for data compression and encryption o Local system administration from Motif[R] graphical user interface and command line o Remote system administration from native client graphical user interface and/or command line o Ability to schedule backups by group, system, or file-system granularity o Support for multiple media pools o Concurrent multiple jukebox support o Enhanced security option o DIGITAL UNIX C2 interoperability o Configuration reports o Savegroup control for stopping and restarting backups o SNMP traps for NetWorker notifications o Clone (duplicate) backup savesets o Concurrent recovery for multiple clients o Reads ANSI tape labels o Recover by saveset o Client-side support for TruClusters o Cluster Server Failover in a TruCluster environment o Consolidate client incremental backups o Transparently migrate and recall files via HSM 2 NetWorker Save and Restore SPD 50.98.12 for DIGITAL UNIX, Version 4.4 The NetWorker server software services backup, archive, HSM, and restore requests issued by systems running NetWorker client software. The server software also contains device and configuration files that control all backup and restore operations. For save and archive operations, the NetWorker client software reads files and file systems and sends the data to the NetWorker server software. During restore and HSM operations, the client software allows the user to select files and request those files from the server software. The server automatically recycles backup (but not archive) media. The only HSM clients supported are DIGITAL UNIX clients and any other Legato NetWorker client that is HSM compatible (such as Sun). HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS Processor Support Alpha-Based Processors For a detailed listing of Alpha-based processors supported as NetWorker servers and as NetWorker clients running the DIGITAL UNIX operating system, see the DIGITAL UNIX Software Product Description (SPD 41.61.xx). This license is included with DIGITAL UNIX and is described in the DIGITAL UNIX SPD (41.61.xx). Server license - Allows a system to provide backup services to itself and licensed client systems. This license is tiered by system type (workgroup = tier 1, departmental = tier 2 and enterprise = tier 3). This license is a prerequisite for server add-ons. Archive license - This server add-on enables archive services. This license is tiered by system type. HSM license - This server add-on enables HSM services. This license is tiered by system type. Save Set Consolidation (SSC) - This server add-on enables save set consolidation operations, which consolidates incremental backups into a full backup. This license is not tiered. SSC is available for DIGITAL UNIX only. Jukebox license - This server add-on enables jukebox access. This license is tiered by jukebox slot capacity. For tape or optical, tier 1 = 1-16 slots, tier 2 = 1-64 slots, tier 3 = 1-64+ slots. For optical libraries, each side of the media is treated as a slot. Each jukebox requires a separate license of the appropriate tier. Jukebox licenses are not cumulative - that is, one tier 3 license will not support two jukeboxes with 10 slots each. If no units of the correct tier license are available for use, NetWorker will use the next higher tier license, if available. Beginning with the V4.3 release, sequential access loaders are no longer supported. Cluster Server This license enables NetWorker to provide cluster server capabilities in TruCluster environments. The NetWorker server, its associated storage, and devices on a shared SCSI bus can be configured to relocate between systems in a cluster should a system become unavailable. To enable the cluster server feature, a cluster host must have NetWorker server license, a cluster server license, appropriate cluster client licenses, plus all optional NetWorker licenses (clients and server add-ons) as appropriate for the configuration. The cluster server license then grants the right to replicate these NetWorker licenses to the other nodes in the 7 NetWorker Save and Restore SPD 50.98.12 for DIGITAL UNIX, Version 4.4 cluster, provided the NetWorker server is run on only one cluster node at a time. Client Licenses UNIX and PC client - Controls the number of clients that may execute NetWorker software and access the server to provide backup, archive, HSM, restore and browse services. There are two types of Client Licenses: 1) a PC client License for PC systems (DOS/Windows, Macintosh [NetWorker Server V4.2A or later required], NetWare, NT[TM]), and 2) a UNIX Client License for other supported systems (DIGITAL UNIX, SunOS, Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX, SGI IRIX, etc.). Each Backup client connection, each Archive client connection, and each HSM client connection requires a separate connection license. Cluster client - Allows NetWorker to support the TruCluster environment Version 1.2 and higher products, and the associated storage. Each cluster host requires a cluster client license, which is available in three tiers: Tier 1 for a workgroup system, Tier 2 for a departmental system, and Tier 3 for an enterprise system. TruCluster services do not require a separate cluster client license if the cluster hosts are properly licensed. If no units of the correct tier license are available for use, NetWorker will use the next higher tier license, if available. A cluster client license also contains an archive client connection license and an HSM client connection license. Note: All client licenses are loaded on the server and enable that server to provide the licensed services to client systems. Client licenses are statically assigned to a specific client system and cannot be dynamically shared among client systems. SQL and Exchange clients - Allows a NetWorker server to back up an SQL and/or Exchange client on-line. An SQL client license and an Exchange client license is required for each SQL and Exchange client to be backed up. In addition, a separate client connection (in addition to the backup client connection) is required to back up an SQL client and an Exchange client. This software is furnished under the licensing provisions of Digital Equipment Corporation's Standard Terms and Conditions. License Management Facility Support NetWorker supports the DIGITAL UNIX License Management Facility. License units for the NetWorker server are allocated on an Unlimited Use basis. For more information on the License Management Facility, refer to the DIGITAL UNIX Operating System Software Product Description (SPD 41.61.xx) or to Software License Management in the DIGITAL UNIX Operating System documentation set. 8 NetWorker Save and Restore SPD 50.98.12 for DIGITAL UNIX, Version 4.4 For more information about DIGITAL's licensing terms and policies, contact your local DIGITAL office. GROWTH CONSIDERATIONS Depending upon the network configuration and distributed backup requirements of the specific environment, NetWorker may require additional hardware components to reach desired levels of performance. Client configurations of more than 200 clients to a single NetWorker server should be discussed with your DIGITAL sales representative or reseller to ensure proper configuration criteria. The HSM module is designed to work best with HSM filesystems up to a few hundred GB per server in size. For configurations outside of this range, contact a DIGITAL storage specialist or reseller for configuration advice. Server performance and client limits vary with the following environment variables: CPU power Memory Disk speed Number and speed of backup devices Network bandwidth Quantity and type of data to be backed up Quantity and type of data to be archived or migrated Frequency of backup Scheduling window Number of clients NetWorker server index size Media index catalog size Client index size For additional configuration information, contact your local DIGITAL office. The NetWorker server software maintains online index files that can become very large, depending on the system and software configuration. The system that executes the NetWorker server software needs to be appropriately configured. The minimum hardware requirements for any future version of this product might be different than the hardware requirements for the current version.
