 Dear HSM Customer,

 In an effort to provide advanced storage management software ca-
 pability to our customers, Digital offers Hierarchical Storage
 Management (HSM) for OpenVMS[TM] Version 2.1 software. Thank you
 for your recent purchase of this product.

 HSM is a layered software product that extends the OpenVMS file
 system, allowing efficient and cost-effective management of infre-
 quently accessed (dormant) data. This is accomplished by shelving
 the data to lower cost devices and automatically unshelving it
 when the data is needed.

 HSM for OpenVMS Version 2.1 software has been designed to run
 on OpenVMS Versions 6.1 through V7.1 on the VAX[TM]and Alpha[TM]
 platforms. The kit you have received is a full release and in-
 cludes both the VAX and Alpha versions of the software. The kit
 includes:

    HSM for OpenVMS, Version 2.1 software and documentation
    MDMS for OpenVMS, Version 2.8A software and documentation
    Save Set Manager (SSMgr) for OpenVMS, Version 1.3A software and
    documentation

 HSM V2.1 can be configured to run in one of two modes, Basic or
 Plus mode. If you are using HSM in the Plus mode, you will need to
 also install either Storage Library System (SLS) V2.8A or newer,
 or Media and Device Management Services (MDMS) V2.8A or newer.
 MDMS V2.8A and Save Set Manager V1.3A are required to use the
 archive repacking and backup via shelving support features of HSM
 Version 2.1. Refer to the Release Notes for more information on
 HSM operational modes and installation of the software. The HSM
 software kit (HSM021) is installed with the VMSINSTAL command
 procedure as described in the Installation Guide. The Guide to
 Operations manual for HSM, MDMS, and SSMgr is found in the on-line
 documentation CD-ROM and may be ordered separately in hard copy
 format.
