DIGITAL MAILbus 400 Message Store for DIGITAL UNIX, Version 1.2B Cover Letter AV-R91CB-TE This Cover Letter lists the changes that have been introduced in Version 1.2B of the MAILbus [TM] 400 Message Store for DIGITAL[TM] UNIX[R]. This Cover Letter also describes how to install Version 1.2B of the MAILbus 400 Message Store. Functional Changes to the MAILbus 400 Message Store The following changes have been made to the MAILbus 400 Message Store for Version 1.2B. Full details of these changes are given in the MAILbus 400 Message Store Release Notes for DIGITAL UNIX. o The MAILbus 400 Message Store V1.2B is now Year 2000 Ready. It will be unaffected by the rollover caused by the turn of the century. o The MAILbus 400 Message Store V1.2B has been tested success- fully for full functional capability on DIGITAL UNIX V4.0D. No problem was encountered during the tests. o The address for Reader's comments as documented in the Re- lease Notes and the books is no longer relevant. If the readers have some comments to send they should use the prepaid read- ers'comments forms, if they are supplied at the back of the book or comments on documentation should be directed to the local customer support centres. o MAILbus 400 Message Store was causing some clients to fail by returning single segment 'acknowledgements' as unsegmented data, even if the client was expecting segmented data. This problem has been fixed. o Internal locking problems were causing Internal Error 54 and Internal Error 55 resulting in an abrupt process exit. This problem has been fixed. o MAILbus 400 Message Store uses a queue to handle incoming con- nections which creates a block in the 'accept' queue. As soon as the incoming event has been handled the connections in the 'accept' queue will be served in a first-come-first-served fashion. o Additional checks have been added to prevent the Message Store database becoming corrupted. These checks also fix possible locking problems while executing critical code paths. o Extensive changes have been applied, particularly within 'threads' handling code so that the overall reliability of Message Store has been improved. o On particularly busy systems minor corruptions sometimes oc- curred in users primary mailboxes. Worst scenario was lost mail. This problem has been fixed. o Message Store does not flush its "startup completed" message to disk imediately, upon completion of its startup phase. o The limitlog utility has been incorporated in Message Store so that users can now limit the amount of diagnostic trace information output to disk. o Any internal error resulting in an image forced exit, will now also result in the production a core dump - from which much more useful information can be derived if needed. o Significant improvements have been made to ensure that un- readable messages are not presented to the user agent. This is predominantly a diagnostic tool that can be optionally switched on. Installing Version 1.2B To install this kit follow the instructions in MAILbus 400 Mes- sage Store Installing on a DIGITAL UNIX System with the following exceptions: o Make sure you install one of the following configurations of prerequisite software: - DIGITAL UNIX V3.2C DECnet[TM]/OSI[R] for DIGITAL UNIX V3.2B MAILbus 400 MTA for DIGITAL UNIX (Base and Mgt Subsets) V2.0A DIGITAL X.500 Directory Service for DIGITAL UNIX (Base Sub- set) V3.0 - DIGITAL UNIX V3.2G DECnet[TM]/OSI[R] for DIGITAL UNIX V3.2B MAILbus 400 MTA for DIGITAL UNIX (Base and Mgt Subsets) V2.0A DIGITAL X.500 Directory Service for DIGITAL UNIX (Base Sub- set) V3.0 - DIGITAL UNIX V4.0B with patches: OSF410-400151 (44.00), OSF410-400196 (85.00), and OSF410-400239-1 (136.01) DECnet/OSI for DIGITAL UNIX, V4.0A or later with dnaevld patched to 12-MAR-97, or later MAILbus 400 MTA for DIGITAL UNIX (Base and Mgt Subsets) V2.0A, or later DIGITAL X.500 Directory Service for DIGITAL UNIX (Base Sub- set) V3.1, or later 2 - DIGITAL UNIX V4.0D DECnet[TM]/OSI[R] for DIGITAL UNIX V4.0A or later MAILbus 400 MTA for DIGITAL UNIX (Base and Mgt Subsets) V2.0A or later DIGITAL X.500 Directory Service for DIGITAL UNIX(Base Sub- set) v3.1, or later o Deinstall the previous MAILbus 400 Message Store software in- stalled on your system, as follows: 1. Load the subsets as follows: # setld -l /mnt/XMSA127/kit The version number of this kit when displayed using NCL management is V1.2-107. To identify this kit, type the following command: what /usr/sbin/xms/xms_server | grep MAILbus The following is the response from this command: MAILbus 400 Message Store (V1.2-107) 07-MAY-1998 3 Be aware that if you have installed Version 1.2B of the MAILbus 400 Message Store on a version of DIGITAL UNIX prior to V4 and want to upgrade DIGITAL UNIX to V4 (or later), you must deinstall and then reinstall Version 1.2B of the MAILbus 400 Message Store before you run Version 1.2B on the upgraded DIGITAL UNIX system. If you fail to do this and attempt to run the MAILbus 400 Message Store without deinstalling and reinstalling it on DIGITAL UNIX V4, the MAILbus 400 Message Store reports a Forced Exit event accompanied by a System Interface Error event when you try to start the MAILbus 400 Message Store, as follows: Event: System Interface Error from: Node nodename Message Store at : 1997-08-01-11:04:05.822+00:00I0.279 System Interface Error = Process Creation Parameter = "Reinstall MS for this UNIX version" Error Text = "Version mismatch" Event: Forced Exit from: Node nodename Message Store at : 1997-08-01-11:04:05.839+00:00I0.279 If you see this error, deinstall Version 1.2B and then reinstall Version 1.2B. You can do this after you have upgraded to V4 of DIGITAL UNIX.
