COMPAQ AV-QD87Q-TE April, 2001 Dear HSM Customer, In an effort to provide enhanced storage management software ca- pability to our customers, Compaq offers this release of Compaq Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) for OpenVMS[TM] Version V3.2 software. Thank you for your recent purchase of this product. HSM is a layered software product that extends the OpenVMS file system, allowing efficient and cost-effective management of infre- quently accessed (dormant) data. This is accomplished by shelving the data to lower-cost devices and automatically unshelving it when the data is needed. HSM V3.2 provides new features as well as bug fixes. Some of the new features are: o Preshelve of noshelvable files o Enabling Multipath switching in an HSM environment HSM and Multipathing engineering have corrected this problem from 7.2 and 7.2-1. For any 7.2 or 7.2-1 user a patch kit is needed from Multipathing and HSM V3.2. Please refer Section 1.2 in Release Notes for more information. o Qualified for OpenVMS Version 7.3 VAX and Alpha - OpenVMS Version 7.3 provides support for Fibre Channel (FC) connected tape devices. This is accomplished through the use of Modular Data Router (MDR) connected to the FC Switch. MDR converts Fibre Channel protocol to SCSI protocol, which the tape device understands. HSM V3.2 has qualified this new feature in OpenVMS 7.3 as used with MDR. Please refer to OpenVMS V7.3 for a complete listing of supported tape devices. o Optimizing the SCMDS Response thread o SMU DETECT for detecting files affected by potential shelving errors NOTE Engineering has made available a product notice to all HSM 3.0X users regarding SMU DETECT issue. Please refer Section 2.1 in Release Notes for more information. For more details on these items or the bug fixes, please refer to the release notes. HSM for OpenVMS V3.2 software has been designed to run on OpenVMS VAX Versions 6.2, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and on OpenVMS Alpha Versions 6.2, 7.1-2, 7.2-1 and 7.3. The kit you have received is a full release and includes both the VAX and Alpha versions of the software. HSM V3.2 does not utilize the ODS5 disk structure. The kit includes: - HSM for OpenVMS, V3.2 software and documentation - MDMS for OpenVMS, V3.2 software and documentation HSM V3.2 can be configured to run in one of two modes, Basic or Plus. If you are using HSM in the Plus mode, you will need to install Media and Device Management Services (MDMS) unless Archive Backup System (ABS) software is already present on your system. MDMS is also required to use the tape repacking and backup via shelving features of HSM V3.2. There is no additional charge for Plus mode. Remote access to tape devices in Plus Mode requires Remote De- vice Facility[TM] (RDF). RDF is available in the MDMS savesets of this kit. An RDF license is required. An RDF license is available through the purchase of Archive Backup System or directly from Touch Technologies Inc. HSM V3.2 is qualified to use MDMS V3.2 or MDMS V2.9F for its media manager. For customers using Storage Library System (SLS) with HSM, we rec- ommend the use of MDMS V2.9F as the media manager. For customers using Archive Backup System (ABS) with HSM, we recommend the use of MDMS V3.2. For HSM customers who are not using either ABS or SLS, we recommend the use of MDMS V3.2 with HSM V3.2. NOTE If you are a DCSC user, you cannot use HSM and DCSC on Fibre Channel. DCSC has chosen not to qualify Fibre Channel on OpenVMS 7.3.
