Prerequisite OpenVMS VAX and OpenVMS Alpha Support To run DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS VAX, you must be running OpenVMS VAX Version 5.5-2 or higher software. To run DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS Alpha, you must be running OpenVMS AXP Version 1.5 or higher software. Minimum Memory Hardware Requirements The minimum amount of memory required for a system user to install, boot, and log in to an OpenVMS VAX system running DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS VAX is 12 MB; 16 MB is highly recommended for more robust performance. The minimum amount of memory required for a system user to install, boot, and log in to an OpenVMS Alpha system running DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS Alpha is 32 MB. Installing DECwindows Motif with POLYCENTER Software You must use the POLYCENTER Software Installation utility to install your DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS software on OpenVMS Version 6.2 (or higher) systems. You can use either the POLYCENTER Software Installation utility or the VMSINSTAL procedure to install your DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS software on OpenVMS Version 6.1 systems. You must use the VMSINSTAL procedure to install DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 software on Version 5.5-2 through Version 6.0 OpenVMS systems. Although DECW$MOTIF_TAILOR.EXE is not shipped as part of the POLYCENTER Software Installation utility included in the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 kit, you may have DECW$MOTIF_TAILOR.EXE residing on your system from an earlier installation of DECwindows Motif. If you have installed DECwindows Motif using the POLYCENTER software and intend on tailoring any DECwindows Motif components, be sure to use the POLYCENTER tailoring feature. Do not use DECW$MOTIF_TAILOR.EXE to tailor DECwindows Motif files. The POLYCENTER utility keeps a history of files installed. If 3 you tailor DECwindows Motif files using DECW$MOTIF_TAILOR.EXE, the POLYCENTER utility history files will not be correct. Documentation The following DECwindows Motif documentation has been updated for the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS release: o DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS Release Notes; in .TXT format in save set A on the media kit o DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS Installation Guide o DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS CD-ROM User's Guide o DECwindows Extensions to Motif o DECwindows Companion to the OSF/Motif Style Guide o DECwindows Motif Guide to Application Programming Refer to the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS Release Notes for a complete list of product documentation. Bookreader For the foreseeable future, Bookreader will continue to be the OpenVMS default online documentation viewer. The Interleaf[R] WorldView Viewer will not be bundled in DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS. CONOLD (consolidated online documentation) will also continue to deliver Bookreader files for viewing OpenVMS operating system and DECwindows Motif documentation. We will continue to use DECDOCUMENT and DECwrite to develop Bookreader files. NCSA Mosaic The NCSA Mosaic viewer is installed as part of the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS systems product installation. The NCSA Mosaic viewer is provided as sample, "as is" software to introduce you to the Internet and help you get started using a World Wide Web viewer. Because the NCSA Mosaic viewer that ships with this release is only a sample implementation, we have placed Mosaic with the other sample software in the DECW$UTILS directory. We plan to replace this sample NCSA Mosaic viewer implementation in a future release. DEClinks DEClinks, formerly known as LinkWorks, is no longer a supported DECwindows Motif feature. Support for DEClinks is removed from the Session Manager, from the desktop applications menus, and from the out-of-the-box (OOTB) desktop applications. Refer to the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS Release Notes for more information. 4 Restrictions The following restrictions apply to the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS release: o Application development is supported for the OSF/Motif Release 1.2.3 Toolkit only. The DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS VAX and Alpha releases do not support development with the X User Interface (XUI), OSF/Motif Release 1.1.3 Toolkit, or Release 1.2.2 Toolkit, although run-time support is available for these environments. However, you can save the XUI or Motif Release 1.1.3 programming files that exist on your system prior to the installation of the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS kit. If you choose to save these programming files, they will be moved to directories and can be accessed for programming. Refer to the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS Installation Guide for more information. o The OSF/Motif Release 1.1.3 and Release 1.2.3 Toolkits, on which the DECwindows Motif Versions 1.1 and 1.2-3 layered products, respectively, are based, are incompatible with each other. However, applications built against the OSF/Motif Release 1.1.3 Toolkit will continue to run without modification with DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS. The OSF/Motif Release 1.1.3 Toolkit shareable libraries will continue to be supplied with the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS layered product and will be available to existing DECwindows applications on the system. Although DECwindows Motif Version 1.1 applications will continue to run without modification with DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS, it is important to note that only those applications that have been built against the OSF/Motif Release 1.2.2 or Release 1.2.3 Toolkits can take advantage of OSF/Motif Release 1.2 features, such as the drag-and-drop features and tear-off menus. Refer to the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS Release Notes for more information. o Application development with DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS software is supported with the Ada, C, DEC C++, Fortran, and Pascal programming languages only. OSF/Motif "strongly typed" language bindings for Ada are available in the DEC Ada for OpenVMS Alpha layered product. o Although Bookreader does support draft printing, this feature is not intended to duplicate the quality of hardcopy books. In addition, while users can print out Bookreader topics that span a couple of pages, printing more pages will produce unsatisfactory results. 5 o DECsound is supported only on TURBOchannel systems. TURBOchannel systems that support DECsound include the following: DEC 3000 Model 400 series DEC 3000 Model 500 series DEC 3000 Model 700 series DEC 3000 Model 900 series VAXstation 4000 Models VLC, 60, and 90 DECsound is not supported on the following systems: DEC 2000 Model 300 series AlphaStation 200 AlphaStation 400 X User Interface (XUI) Support By continuing to provide the XUI run-time environment in several DECwindows Motif releases, Digital has provided customers with a gradual transition from XUI to Motif. However, future versions of the DECwindows Motif product will not include run-time support for either XUI or previous versions of the OSF/Motif toolkit. Customers have consistently expressed a preference for the standards-based Motif technology. Unsupported Processors For performance reasons, the following processors are not supported as of the release of the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2 for OpenVMS VAX product: VAXstation II VAXstation 2000 MicroVAX II MicroVAX 2000 VAX-11/750 VAX-11/780 VAX-11/785 6
