DIGITAL AV-QD87N-TE October, 2000 Dear HSM Customer, In an effort to provide enhanced storage management software capability to our customers, Compaq offers this release of Compaq Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) for OpenVMS[TM] Version V3.1 software. Thank you for your recent purchase of this product. HSM is a layered software product that extends the OpenVMS file system, allowing efficient and cost-effective management of infrequently accessed (dormant) data. This is accomplished by shelving the data to lower-cost devices and automatically unshelving it when the data is needed. HSM V3.1 provides several new features as well as bug fixes. Some of the new features are: o A new qualifier for the UNSHELVE command, the /HIGH_PRIORITY qualifier. The use of this qualifier boosts the priority of the unshelve request. o The automatic checkpoint generated as the result of problems are logged in the shelf handler log. o Changes to the SMU ANALYZE/REPAIR command. o An OPCOM alert for HSM license use. Now when 95% of the license capacity is used, an OPCOM message is issued. For more details on these items or the bug fixes, please refer to the release notes. HSM for OpenVMS V3.1 software has been designed to run on Open- VMS VAX Versions 6.2, 7.1, 7.2 and on OpenVMS Alpha Versions 6.2, 7.1, 7.2 and 7.2-1. The kit you have received is a full release and includes both the VAX and Alpha versions of the software. HSM V3.1 does not support the ODS5 disk structure. The kit includes: - HSM for OpenVMS, V3.1 software and documentation - MDMS for OpenVMS, V3.1 software and documentation HSM V3.1 can be configured to run in one of two modes, Basic or Plus. If you are using HSM in the Plus mode, you will need to install Media and Device Management Services (MDMS) unless Archive Backup System (ABS) software is already present on your system. MDMS is also required to use the tape repacking and backup via shelving support features of HSM V3.1. Remote access to tape devices in Plus Mode requires Remote Device Facility[TM] (RDF). RDF is available through MDMS on the Consolidated Software CD-ROM. An RDF license is required. An RDF license is available through the purchase of Archive Backup System or directly from Touch Technologies Inc. HSM V3.1 supports the use of MDMS V3.1 or MDMS V2.9C for its media manager. For customers using Storage Library Systme (SLS) with HSM, we recommend the use of MDMS V2.9D as the media manager. For cus- tomers using Archive Backup System (ABS) with HSM, we recommend the use of MDMS V3.1. For HSM customers who are not using either ABS or SLS, we recommend the use of MDMS V3.1 with HSM V3.1. For additional information, please refer to the product documen- tation. If you need assistance with this product, please call the Customer Support Center.
