DIGITAL Before You Install DEC Data Distributor Version 6.0 AV-JD85L-TE This Before You Install Letter contains information about in- stalling both DEC Data Distributor for OpenVMS AXP and DEC Data Distributor for OpenVMS VAX, and uses the full name of the prod- uct for information that is specific to one platform. This let- ter uses the name Data Distributor to refer to information that applies to both DEC Data Distributor for OpenVMS AXP and DEC Data Distributor for OpenVMS VAX. The term VAXcluster refers to a cluster of VAX systems. The term VMScluster refers to a clus- ter of AXP systems or a dual-architecture that includes both VAX and AXP systems. The package accompanying this letter contains the Data Distribu- tor software, installation instructions, and user documentation. Read the DEC Data Distributor Installation Guide in its entirety before installing Data Distributor. Pay special attention to the following: o You must install OpenVMS for VAX Version 5.4 or higher on VAX systems and OpenVMS for AXP Version 1.5 on AXP systems. o You must install DEC Rdb Version 6.0 on your system, VMSclus- ter, or VAXcluster before you can install Data Distributor. o DEC Rdb Version 6.0 supports the simultaneous running of Rdb/VMS Version 4.0, Version 4.1, and Version 4.2, as well as, DEC Rdb Version 5.0, 5.1, and 6.0 on the same node or cluster. You can continue to run a prior version of Data Dis- tributor with the compatible version of Rdb/VMS or DEC Rdb, such as Data Distributor Version 2.4 with Rdb/VMS Version 4.2. Or, you can install Data Distributor Version 6.0 and run it with DEC Rdb Version 6.0. If you install Data Distributor Version 6.0, you supersede any prior version of Data Distrib- utor. You cannot run multiple versions of Data Distributor on the same cluster. o If you are running multiple versions of DEC Rdb (or Rdb/VMS, or both) on your cluster and Version 6.0 is a multiversion variant, you must set your system default to the DEC Rdb Version 6.0 environment before running Data Distributor Version 6.0. To set the system default to DEC Rdb Version 6.0, enter the following command: $ @SYS$LIBRARY:RDBVMS_SETVER 6.0 /SYSTEM o You can run the IVP as part of the Data Distributor installa- tion. Because the IVP indirectly invokes the RMU utility when you run Data Distributor in a multiversion environment of DEC Rdb, you must execute the following statement before you run Data Distributor or before you run the IVP independently: $ @SYS$LIBRARY:RDBVMS_SETVER RESET o You must register the Data Distributor license through the VMS License Management Facility (LMF) in accordance with the license agreement signed by your site. The license registra- tion information you need is contained in the Product Autho- rization Key (PAK) that is shipped with Data Distributor. The PAK is a paper certificate that contains information about the license you need to run a particular piece of software. The DEC Data Distributor Installation Guide contains infor- mation about registering and loading your Data Distributor license. ©Digital Equipment Corporation. 1994. If this is the first time you are using Data Distributor, you must modify your system startup and shutdown procedures to automatically start up and shut down Data Distributor. If you are converting to Data Distribu- tor Version 6.0 from a version lower than Version 2.3, you must change the format of your transfer database to con- form to the format of the current version. Conversion of a transfer database is only performed if it is from Data Dis- tributor Version 2.1 or higher. If you are using a version of Data Distributor prior to Version 2.1, you must delete the transfer database and recreate it after Version 6.0 is installed. These and other postinstallation procedures are explained in the Version 6.0 DEC Data Distributor Installation Guide. o Data Distributor can work within a DECnet for VMS or DEC- net/OSI for VMS software environment. If you use DECnet/OSI for VMS, Data Distributor expects node names to be one to six characters long. If you have longer node names, you must define and use synonyms for those names so that the six-character limit is observed. Node name synonyms can be registered either in a local or a distributed name service database. For details on establishing node name synonyms, refer to the documents for DECnet/OSI for VMS. o Data Distributor provides release notes online. During in- stallation, you have the option of displaying and/or printing the release notes. After installation, the release notes will be located in the following ASCII file: SYS$HELP:DDAL060.RELEASE_NOTES 3
