The sections in this chapter provide the necessary information to make your installation run smoothly. You will need to know about and be aware of your installation options and information related to the installation procedure. This chapter will help you determine the following: o Which DECwatchdog/Autopilot subsets you can install according to the registered license under your sytem o If installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot from media, whether your distribution kit includes all the components listed on the Bill of Materials (BOM) o Whether you need superuser privileges for the system on which you will be installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot o If the system on which you will install DECwatchdog/Autopilot meets the DECwatchdog/Autopilot hardware, software, and disk space requirements o Which optional DECwatchdog/Autopilot subsets you should install o How much disk space you will need o Whether you have to back up your system disk DECwatchdog/Autopilot is used with groups of computers. A group is composed of 2 to 16 computers communicating across a local area network and collaborating to perform a critical application. A copy of DECwatchdog/Autopilot software must be installed on each computer in a group. A critical application and the description of the group of computers on which this application runs form a DECwatchdog /Autopilot mission. Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1-1 Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation DECwatchdog/Autopilot provides three main features for a mission (defined below): o watchdog and failover recovery, o software and hardware redundancy management (distributed lock management), o mission maintenance facilities, stop and start 1.0.1 Mixed versions DECwatchdog/Autopilot version 2.1 exists for several Operating Systems. It can therefore be used in a group of computers forming a mission and containing these different supported Operating Systems. However, 2.1 is not compatible with previous versions; therefore 2.1 as a minimum must be installed on the other nodes of the group for the mission. During operation DECwatchdog/Autopilot checks for use of compatible revision versions of the software on different nodes of the group. You must ensure that functionally equivalent versions are installed on all the nodes of the group for the mission. 1.1 License Registration DECwatchdog/Autopilot includes support for the License Management Facility (LMF). A License Product Authorization Key (License PAK) is required per node, and must be registered in the License Database (LDB) in order to use DECwatchdog/Autopilot on newly-licensed node. The License PAK may be shipped along with the kit if you ordered the license and media together; otherwise, it is shipped separately to a location based on your license order. If you are installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot as an update on a node already licensed for this software, you have already completed the License PAK registration requirements. The installation and Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) can be performed without the License PAK registration, but the License PAK must be registered into the system before attempting to start the product. 1-2 Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1.1 License Registration At the superuser prompt, edit an empty PAK template with the lmf register command as follows, and include all the information on your License PAK. # lmf register After you register your license, use the following lmf reset command to copy the license details from the License Database (LDB) to the kernel cache: # lmf reset For complete information on using the License Management Facility, see the OSF/1 Version OSF/1 Version 2.0 Guide to Software License Management or the ULTRIX Version 4.3 (or later) Guide to Software Licensing or the lmf8 reference page. 1.2 Checking the Media Software Distribution Kit If you are installing the software from media, use the Bill of Materials (BOM) to check the contents of your software distribution kit. The kit includes this installation guide and one of the following: o The CDROM disk for systems with RRD42 drives, o The TK50 tape cartridge, labeled DECwatchdog/Autopilot 2.1, for systems with TK50 or TK70 tape cartridge drives, o TLZ06 magnetic tape. 1.3 Installation Procedure Requirements This section discusses various requirements for installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot. Installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot and running the Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) on your target system takes 2 to 10 minutes. 1.3.1 Checking Login Privileges You must be able to log in as superuser on the system where you are installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot. Only when you are logged in as superuser do you have sufficient privileges to install the DECwatchdog/Autopilot software. Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1-3 Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1.3 Installation Procedure Requirements 1.3.2 Hardware Requirements To perform the installation you need the following hardware: o for Ultrix Version - Ultrix Supported RISC processor (MIPS R3000 and R4000) as specified in Software Product Description 45.81.xx o for OSF Version - OSF/1 supported AXP processor as specified in Software Product Description 47.74.xx o RISC or AXP processor. o Software distribution device (if installing from media) You need a distribution device that corresponds with the software distribution media. For example, if you have a TK50 software kit, you need a TK50 or TK70 tape drive. The documentation for the tape or disk drive that you are using explains how to load the media on the drive. o Terminal You can use either a hardcopy or video terminal to communi- cate with the operating system and respond to prompts. 1.3.2.1 Optional Hardware DECwatchdog/Autopilot runs on a system with one Ethernet controller. However, two independent TCP/IP Ethernet are required to benefit from the full functionality of DECwatchdog/Autopilot. 1.3.3 Software Requirements 1.3.3.1 ULTRIX Software Requirements The installation procedure verifies the following requirements, and aborts with an error message if they are not met: DECwatchdog/Autopilot Version 2.1 requires that ULTRIX/RISC Version 4.3 or higher be installed. In addition, DECwatchdog/Autopilot also requires that the following ULTRIX software subsets are loaded on the system where you install DECwatchdog/Autopilot: UDTBASE4xx (where xx is at least 30 ) which is named "Base System" UDTINET4xx (where xx is at least 30) which is named "TCP/IP Networking Utilities" 1-4 Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1.3 Installation Procedure Requirements To install the optional DECwatchdog/Autopilot reference pages (manual pages), the following ULTRIX software subsets must be installed on the system where you install DECwatchdog/Autopilot: UDTMAN4xx, (where xx is at least 30) which is named "Ref. Pages for Sys. Admin. & Users" UDTDCMT4xx, (where xx is at least 30) which is named "Doc. Preparation for Ref. Pages" If you are installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot in a local (node- specific) environment, perform the following steps to determine whether the preceding ULTRIX subsets are loaded: 1. Log in to the system where you plan to install DECwatchdog /Autopilot. 2. Enter the following commands: % setld -i | grep BASE % setld -i | grep INET % setld -i | grep MAN % setld -i | grep DCMT Check the displayed rows for the relevant subset names and for any related patch names. The word installed appears in a row after the subset identifier code when a subset is loaded. If the word installed does not appear (the second column in a row is blank), the subset or patch is not loaded. In this case, you must load the missing ULTRIX software before installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot. 1.3.3.2 OSF/1 Software Requirements The installation procedure verifies the following requirements, and aborts with an error message if they are not met: DECwatchdog/Autopilot Version 2.1 requires that DEC OSF/1 AXP Operating System Version 2.0 or higher be installed. In addition, DECwatchdog/Autopilot requires that the following OSF/1 software subsets be loaded on the system where you install DECwatchdog/Autopilot: OSFBASE200 which is named "Base System" OSFCLINET200 which is named "Basic Networking Services" To install the optional DECwatchdog/Autopilot reference pages (manual pages), the following OSF/1 software subsets must be installed on the system where you install DECwatchdog/Autopilot: OSFMANOS200, which is named "Ref. Pages: Admin/User" Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1-5 Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1.3 Installation Procedure Requirements OSFDCMT200, which is named "Doc. Preparation Tools" If you are installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot in a local (node- specific) environment, perform the following steps to determine whether the preceding OSF/1 subsets are loaded: 1. Log in to the system where you plan to install DECwatchdog /Autopilot. 2. Enter the following commands: % /usr/sbin/setld -i | grep BASE % /usr/sbin/setld -i | grep CLINET % /usr/sbin/setld -i | grep MANOS % /usr/sbin/setld -i | grep DCMT Check the displayed rows for the relevant subset names and for any related patch names. The word installed appears in a row after the subset identifier code when a subset is loaded. If the word installed does not appear, the subset or patch is not loaded. In this case, you must load the missing software before installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot. 1.3.4 Determining Which Subsets to Load You must choose the DECwatchdog/Autopilot subsets you want to load. The DECwatchdog/Autopilot subsets have the following titles: o DECwatchdog/Autopilot Binary 2.1 This is the DECwatchdog /Autopilot base system and is a required subset. Its identifier is WDXBIN210. o DECwatchdog/Autopilot On Line Manual Pages 2.1 The online reference page subset is an optional subset. Its identifier is WDXMAN210. 1.3.5 Determining Disk Space Requirements 1.3.5.1 ULTRIX Disk Space Requirements Table 1-1 list the disk space requirements for loading DECwatchdog/Autopilot software subsets on RISC processors running the ULTRIX operating system. This table specifies disk space requirements by file system after installation for the convenience of those doing installations on systems where these file systems are mount points for different disk partitions. 1-6 Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1.3 Installation Procedure Requirements Table 1-1 Worksheet for Subset Sizes (Kilobytes Required) on __________RISC_Processors_______________________________________ Subset /var /usr Subset_Title__________Name________/etc__/wdx__/man__/usr/kits___ DECwatchdog Binary WDXBIN210 200 4 0 10 DECwatchdog On Line WDXMAN210 0 0 40 0 Manual Pages Totals:___________________________(200)_(4)___(40)__(10)________ 1.3.5.2 OSF/1 Disk Space Requirements Table 1-2 list the disk space requirements for loading DECwatchdog/Autopilot software subsets on AXP processors running the OSF/1 operating system. Compare the space required for subsets with the free space currently available on the disks where DECwatchdog/Autopilot files will reside. Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1-7 Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1.3 Installation Procedure Requirements Note that free disk space requirements are checked by the installation procedure on OSF/1 systems. To determine the current amount of free space for a directory path, log in to the system where you plan to install DECwatchdog /Autopilot. Enter the df command to determine total space and free space for the one or two file systems where DECwatchdog/Autopilot files will reside. For example: # df / /usr Filesystem Total kbytes kbytes % node kbytes used free used Mounted on /dev/rz0a 15823 11274 2967 79% / /dev/rz0g 122598 54447 55892 49% /usr The above display indicates that there are 2967Kb free on / and 55892Kb free on /usr. This free space must accommodate subset requirements listed in Tables 1-2 and 1-1 for both the / and /usr file systems. On OSF/1 systems where /usr/share/man is mounted to a different device from /usr, enter the following command: # df /usr/share/man In this case, you compare the space required for DECwatchdog /Autopilot files in /usr/share/man to the free space displayed in the first line of the df output list. On ULTRIX systems where /usr/man is mounted on a different device from /usr, enter the following command: # df /usr/man In this case, you compare the space required for DECwatchdog /Autopilot files in /usr/man to the free space displayed in the first line of the df output list. 1.4 Backing Up Your System Disk Digital recommends that you back up your system disk before installing any software. For details on performing a system disk backup, see your operating system documentation. 1-8 Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1.5 Stopping the Installation 1.5 Stopping the Installation You can stop the installation procedure any time by using Ctrl /C. However, files created up to this point are not deleted automatically. You must delete these files interactively. Appendix B lists the files and directories created during the installation procedure. 1.6 Error Recovery If errors occur during the installation, the installation procedure fails and the system displays failure messages. Errors can occur during the installation if any of the following conditions exist: o If the host processor type is incorrect. For example on OSF/1 and ULTRIX systems the following messages are displayed: ********************* E R R O R ****************** * * * You are installing the ULTRIX DECwatchdog kit * * An ALPHA OSF/1 kit is required to install on your host* * * ********************************************************** ********************* E R R O R ****************** * * * You are installing the OSF/1 DECwatchdog kit * * A RISC ULTRIX kit is required to install on your host * * * ********************************************************** o If the operating system version is incorrect, or the prerequisite software version is incorrect or the required subsets are not installed, the following message is displayed: ********************* E R R O R ****************** * * * Missing Dependencies, cannot install * * * ********************************************************** Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1-9 Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1.6 Error Recovery o If an earlier version of the wdx software is already installed the following message is displayed: ********************* E R R O R ****************** * * * The following subsets are already installed: * * WDXBIN012 * * WDXMAN012 * * Please delete them by entering: * * # setld -d WDXBIN012 * * # setld -d WDXMAN012 * * The format of the configuration file has changed. * * However, if you want to keep the information, save * * your configuration file before deleting your subsets.* * * ********************************************************** o If attempt to install the wdx software when wdx process is running the following message is displayed: ********************* E R R O R ****************** * * * The 'wdx' image is currently processing. * * Please stop it before installing this new version. * * * ********************************************************** o If the system parameter values for successful installation are insufficient: For descriptions of error messages generated by this condition, see the operating system documentation on system messages, recovery procedures, and operating system software installation. For information on system software requirements, see Section 1.3.3. If an error occurs while using DECwatchdog/Autopilot and you believe the error is caused by a problem with DECwatchdog /Autopilot, take one of the following actions: o If you have a basic or DECsupport Software Agreement, call your Customer Support Center (CSC). The CSC provides telephone support for high-level advisory and remedial assistance. o If you have a Self-Maintenance Software Agreement, you can submit a Software Performance Report (SPR). 1-10 Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1.6 Error Recovery o If you purchased DECwatchdog/Autopilot within the last 90 days and you think the problem is caused by a software error, you can submit an SPR. Preparing for DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installation 1-11 2 ________________________________________________________________ Installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot This chapter describes the installation procedures for DECwatchdog/Autopilot. You can install DECwatchdog/Autopilot locally from tape, CDROM, or network. Section 2.1 explains how to do a local installation. 2.1 Installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot Locally In a local (node-specific) installation, the system on which you install DECwatchdog/Autopilot uses its own disks to run DECwatchdog/Autopilot. A local (node-specific) installation procedure loads DECwatchdog/Autopilot files onto the disks that belong to the system where you perform the installation. When DECwatchdog/Autopilot is run, its executable files are mapped into memory on the same system. 2.1.1 Starting the Installation Procedure 2.1.1.1 Using TK50 or Magnetic Tape Distribution Media If you are installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot from tape media, start the installation procedure as follows: 1. Mount the media on the appropriate tape drive. 2. Log in as superuser. 3. Entering the following command to ensure that you are at the root (/) directory: # cd / 4. Enter a setld command that specifies the -l (load) function and the device special file name for the tape drive where the media is mounted. For example, if you load a magnetic tape on tape unit 0, enter the following command: # setld -l /dev/rmt0h Installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot 2-1 Installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot 2.1 Installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot Locally The installation procedure displays the following information and prompt: Please make sure your installation tape is mounted and on-line. Are you ready (y/n)? After all tape rewind and wind operations are complete and the tape drive indicates online status, enter y. 2.1.1.2 Using CDROM Consolidated Distribution Media If you are installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot from disk, start the installation procedure as follows: 1. Mount the media on the appropriate disk drive. 2. Log in as superuser. 3. Enter the following command to ensure that you are at the root (/) directory: # cd / 4. Specify the /mnt directory to be the mount point for the distribution file system on the drive. If your drive is rz1, enter the following command: # mount /dev/rz1c /mnt 5. Enter a setld command that requests the load function and identifies the directory in the mounted file system where DECwatchdog/Autopilot subsets are located. The directory location for these subsets is /mnt/????/WDX210, where ???? is representative of the operating system. # setld -l /mnt/???/WDX210 2.1.1.3 Using a copy from another node on network If a copy a the kit is available on another node you can perform the installation though the network with the following operations: o on machine1 (to create the kit subsets) - # mkdir directory - # cd directory - # setld -x device 2-2 Installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot Installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot 2.1 Installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot Locally o on machine2 - # mount machine1:directory /mnt - # setld -l /mnt See Section 2.1.2 to continue the installation. 2.1.2 Responding to Installation Procedure Prompts This section explains the installation procedure prompts and displays. 2.1.2.1 Selecting Subsets After you enter the setld command for local (node-specific) installations the installation procedure displays the names of the DECwatchdog/Autopilot subsets and asks you to specify the subsets that you want to load: The subsets listed below are optional: There may be more optional subsets than can be presented on a single screen. If this is the case, you can choose subsets screen by screen or all at once on the last screen. All of the choices you make will be collected for your confirmation before any subsets are installed. 1) DECwatchdog Binary V2.1 2) DECwatchdog On Line Manual Pages V2.1 Or you may choose one of the following options: 3) ALL of the above 4) CANCEL selections and redisplay menus 5) EXIT without installing any subsets Enter your choices or press RETURN to redisplay menus. Choices (for example, 1 2 4-6): 1 2 If you specify more than one number at the prompt, separate each number with a space, not a comma. Next, the script lets you verify your choice. For example, if you enter 3 in response to the previous prompt, you will see the following display: Installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot 2-3 Installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot 2.1 Installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot Locally You are installing the following optional subsets: DECwatchdog Binary V2.1 DECwatchdog On Line Manual Pages V2.1 Is this correct? (y/n): y If the displayed subsets are not the ones you intended to choose, enter n. In this case, the subset selection menu is again displayed, and you can correct your choice of optional subsets. If the displayed subsets are the ones you want to load, enter y. 2.1.2.2 Monitoring Displays During the Subset Loading Process The procedure displays a message that the installation is starting: Chapter 3 discusses the postinstallation requirements specified in the final informational messages from the procedure. If, during the course of the installation, you encounter errors from the setld utility, see the Diagnostics section of the setld(8) reference page for an explanation of the error and the appropriate action to take. If the verification process fails, look at the message to diagnose the problem. 2-4 Installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot 3 ________________________________________________________________ Completing the Installation This chapter explains what you need to do following the installation to make DECwatchdog/Autopilot ready for use. 3.1 Running the Installation Verification Procedure After installing DECwatchdog/Autopilot, you should run the Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) independently to verify that the software is available on your system. The DECwatchdog/Autopilot IVP verifies that all required files are present. To run the IVP after an installation, enter the following command: # setld -v subsetname Use WDXBIN210 or WDXMAN210 as the subsetname. You might also want to run the IVP after a system failure to be sure that users can access DECwatchdog/Autopilot. For a sample DECwatchdog/Autopilot IVP, see Appendix A. 3.1.1 IVP Error If a required file is not present on your system, an error message is displayed, for example: /usr/kits/wdx210/wdx210.release_notes is missing 3.2 Configuring DECwatchdog/Autopilot For configuration of the DECwatchdog/Autopilot on your system, you should refer to the DECwatchdog/Autopilot Software User's Guide.
