Hewlett-Packard Cover Letter for: HP Integrity Essential OpenVMS Global Workload Manager (gWLM) V1.1 for OpenVMS December 2005 Dear OpenVMS Customer, Hewlett-Packard is pleased to introduce the first release of OpenVMS Global Workload Manager (V1.1) for both Alpha and Integrity server platforms. gWLM is the first of the HP Virtualization technologies ported to OpenVMS, offering customers the opportunity to obtain better utilisation out of their AlphaServer and Itanium CPUs. This cover letter discusses the following topics: o OpenVMS gWLM V1.1 Features o OpenVMS gWLM Management Clients o HP Service Support o Documentation o Software Product Description o OpenVMS gWLM Software Distributions Before installation, please take a look at the Release Notes (provided separately) for the latest information about this release. o Features HP OpenVMS Global Workload Manager (gWLM) is a multi-system, multi-OS workload manager with an intelligent policy engine. It is an integral component of the HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE). It integrates with resource management (whole processor and sub-CPU allocation mechanisms within a single operating system) and virtual partitioning techniques to dynamically reallocate resources to applications based on application performance or business policy. This improves server utilization while maintaining and monitoring service levels across many servers. gWLM enables customers to set policies that automatically optimise usage of all CPUs within a multi-CPU system, VMScluster or network of OpenVMS Integrity and AlphaServer systems. This results in: * Improved utilization of Integrity or Alpha CPUs across multiple work streams * Automatic CPU resource allocation to satisfy Service Level Agreements (SLAs) of multiple Business Units, based on IT management defined policies OpenVMS Global Workload Manager has been designed for data center environments where a central IT organization is acting as a service provider to internal customers or a Service Provider is allocating compute resources to multiple, independent organisations bound by stringent SLAs. gWLM will allow standard resource allocation policies or policies specific to individual customer requirements to be quickly and easily deployed across a consolidated, virtualized data center. Please note that gWLM V1.1 does not move workloads across nodes to a system that is underutilised. It allocates CPUs to where the demand is within each specific system. o OpenVMS gWLM Management Clients Each gWLM Agent is managed from the gWLM Central Management Server (CMS), that is integrated with HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM). Both CMS and SIM are free of charge. OpenVMS customers have the following choice of platforms for hosting CMS and SIM: * HP-UX and Linux versions are available from the HP Software Depot on the Web HP-UX CMS: http://h20293.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=T2412AA Linux CMS: http://h20293.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=T2413AA HP Systems Insight Manager 4.2 ? Linux http://h20293.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=T2416BA * OpenVMS also offers a Windows XP version available only from the OpenVMS external web site and only for use with the OpenVMS gWLM Agents Windows CMS for OpenVMS only ? http://h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/integrity/integrity_gwm.html HP Systems Insight Manager 4.2 ? Windows http://h20293.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=T2415BA All versions communicate and manage each OpenVMS gWLM Agent in the network. There is no limit to the number of Agents that may be managed from one CMS station. CMS provides a Web accessible Graphical User Interface (GUI) for managing, monitoring and configuring, from which the system manager or administrator manages gWLM Agents running on multiple OpenVMS systems across the network. The CMS also provides multiple reporting and graphical displays of CPU usage on any selected system or systems as required. o HP Service Support and Tools A variety of service options are available from HP.
