          Compaq NAS Packages Version 8.1a for OpenVMS Alpha Systems



          Read Before Installing

          This letter introduces Compaq NAS Packages Version 8.1a for
          OpenVMS Alpha Systems.

          NAS Packages provide client/server enabling software, including:

          o  Licenses to use selected component products

          o  NAS Packages documentation

          The Compaq NAS packages components are available as separate
          kits on the OpenVMS Alpha Software Products Library (SPL).
          See the SPL Master Index for the location of the NAS component
          products, and the Onlline Documentation Library (ODL) Master
          Index for the location of the product documentation. These
          Master Indexes are also in the [README] directory on disc 1 of
          both the SPL and ODL. Some component kits may also be available
          as separate independent product offerings.

          Consult the Software Licensing Table in each of the Compaq NAS
          Software Product Descriptions (SPDs) for a complete list of the
          NAS components per package.

          Technical considerations for all NAS Packages Customers

          To successfully install the components that make up your NAS
          Packages, please read the instructions in the Compaq NAS Pack-
          ages for OpenVMS Alpha Systems Installation Guide, which out-
          lines the following procedures:

          o  Loading your Product Authorization Key (PAK)

          o  Installing the Compaq NAS Packages Base Kit (optional)

          o  Installing the Compaq NAS components and rebooting as neces-
             sary.

          See the Software Product Description (SPD) and the Compaq NAS
          Packages Installation Guide for a complete list of the compo-
          nents for each NAS package. See "Installing a NAS Package: At a
          Glance," a checklist in Chapter 2 of the Installation Guide, for
          a simple summary of the NAS installation procedures.

 






          Products Removed from Compaq NAS Packages

          With the December, 1999 release of the OpenVMS Alpha Software
          Products Library, the following products are no longer provided
          in the NAS Packages:

          o  DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Language Variants

             -  UI/Cesky

             -  UI/Español

             -  UI/Français

             -  UI/Italiano

             -  UI/Magyar

             -  UI/Polski

             -  UI/Slovensky

             -  UI/Svenska

          o  MailWorks Server for OpenVMS

          o  ObjectBroker for OpenVMS

          o  Oracle Rdb

          o  POLYCENTER Software Distribution for OpenVMS Alpha (Client
             and Server)

          o  POLYCENTER Performance Advisor for OpenVMS

          o  POLYCENTER Performance Data Collector for OpenVMS

          o  POSIX

          Please contact your local Compaq office for availability or
          retirement information on the above products.

          The Compaq NAS Version 8.1a documentation has been delivered to
          you in online form. The Compaq NAS Packages provide documenta-
          tion in Bookreader, PostScript, and ASCII formats.
