               Dear SMF customer:

               In an effort to provide continuously improved Storage
               Management Software capability to our customers, Digital
               offers Sequential Media Filesystem (SMF) software for
               the OpenVMS VAX[TM] and Alpha[TM] platforms.

               SMF is a layered software product that provides an ad-
               vanced tape file system that makes using low-cost tape
               media almost as easy and convenient as using disk me-
               dia. As a result, large sequential files can be moved
               from disk to tape, which reduces backup times and lowers
               operation costs.

               SMF Dependencies

               o  OpenVMS VAX Versions 6.1, 6.2 or 7.1

               o  OpenVMS Alpha Version 6.2 or 7.1

               o  Rdb Version 5.1 or above

               o  Storage Library System for OpenVMS (SLS) Version 2.8A
                  or Media and Device Management Services for OpenVMS
                  (MDMS) Version 2.8A

               Notes:

               o  MDMS is included in the SLS directory on the OpenVMS
                  VAX or OpenVMS Alpha Consolidated Distribution CD.

               o  MDMS must be installed before SMF is installed. No
                  license is necessary for installing MDMS from the
                  above listed Consolidated Distribution CD.

               o  For existing SLS customers, do not install MDMS over
                  your existing SLS installation! If you intend to
                  install SMF on the same system on which you have
                  SLS installed, you must first upgrade to SLS Version
                  2.8A. For additional information, please refer to the
                  MDMS Release Notes included in this kit.
