          Read Before Installing or Using HP BASIC Version 1.6
          for OpenVMS Alpha Systems

          April 2005

          This release is a maintenance update of HP BASIC for OpenVMS Al-
          pha. It is identical to HP BASIC for OpenVMS I64 systems except
          for a few platform-dependent exceptions. These differences are
          noted in the accompanying release notes.

          Installation Information

          For installation information, see the HP BASIC for OpenVMS Alpha
          Systems Installation Guide.

          Release Notes Information

          The release notes for HP BASIC Version 1.6 for OpenVMS Alpha
          Systems contain general notes, performance hints, a summary
          of known problems, and documentation information. To read the
          release notes before installing HP BASIC, invoke VMSINSTAL
          and follow the instructions in the HP BASIC for OpenVMS Alpha
          Systems Installation Guide. After installation of HP BASIC, the
          release notes are located in:

             SYS$HELP:BASIC016.RELEASE_NOTES and BASIC016_RELEASE_NOTES.PS

          License Management Facility Information

          To install HP BASIC Version 1.6 for OpenVMS Alpha Systems, you
          must first register a License Product Authorization Key (license
          PAK) using the License Management Facility (LMF). See the HP
          BASIC for OpenVMS Alpha Systems Installation Guide for licensing
          instructions.

          Contents of the Release

          The release is composed of two distributions:

          o  Layered product distribution, which contains the HP BASIC
             software and the following documentation in .PS and .TXT
             formats:

             -  HP BASIC for OpenVMS Alpha Systems Installation Guide

             -  This cover letter that you are reading

          o  Online documentation distribution, which contains the follow-
             ing HP BASIC manuals:

             -  HP BASIC for OpenVMS Reference Manual

             -  HP BASIC for OpenVMS User Manual

             -  HP BASIC for OpenVMS Alpha Systems Installation Guide
