          Dear DECwindows Motif Customer,

          HP is pleased to introduce the HP DECwindows Motif for HP Open-
          VMS Alpha Version 1.3 release.

          New Features

          The DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Alpha Version 1.3 release
          represents a significant upgrade to the DECwindows Motif
          layered product software on the OpenVMS Alpha platform.
          DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Alpha Version 1.3 includes an up-
          graded DECwindows Motif client and DECwindows X11 display server
          software that provide compatibility with the X Window System
          Version 11, Release 6.6 (X11R6.6) protocol.

          In addition to updated versions of the X Window library (Xlib)
          and X Toolkit Intrinsics (Xt) in support of X11R6.6, the Version
          1.3 release also includes:

          o  New and enhanced X extensions

                Application Group (XC-APPGROUP)
                Big Requests (BIG-REQUESTS)
                Colormap Utilization Policy (TOG-CUP)
                Extended Visual Information (EVI)
                Low-Bandwidth X (LBX)
                Security (SECURITY)
                Synchronization (SYNC)
                XC-MISC
                X Double Buffer (DBE)
                XINERAMA (formerly known as PANORAMIX)
                X Keyboard (XKB)
                X Print (client only)

          o  Inter-Client Exchange (ICE) and Session Management protocols

          o  Expanded DECwindows workstation display device capabilities

          o  Multithreading support

          o  Enhanced user-based and new token-based (based on MIT-MAGIC-
             COOKIE-1 or MIT-KERBEROS-5) access control mechanisms

          o  LBX proxy server and proxy management applications

          o  New logical connection number (LCN) programming interface

 






          o  Support for additional fonts and keyboard management utili-
             ties (such as, accessx and xkbcomp)

          o  Enhanced font support, including licensed support for the
             iType font rasterizer from Agfa Monotype Corporation and
             related scalable font families (Albany, Cumberland, Screen
             Sans, Screen Serif, and Thorndale); and two new fonts (Bit-
             stream Charter and Adobe Utopia) available with X11R6.6

          o  Euro support

          Local Area Transport (LAT) and User-Written Transports Not
          Supported in the Version 1.3 Environment

          With Version 1.3, significant changes were made to the DECwin-
          dows Motif transport library to accommodate multithreading and
          the communication needs of the Inter-Client Exchange (ICE) pro-
          tocol, Low-Bandwidth X (LBX) proxy server, Font server, and
          Input Method server.

          The DECnet, TCP/IP, and local network transport interfaces have
          been updated, remain available, and function as expected in
          the Version 1.3 environment. However, the DECwindows Motif
          interface to the Local Area Transport (LAT), as well as any
          custom, user-written transports built against previous versions
          of the DECwindows Motif client libraries, may not function as
          expected and are expressly not supported in the Version 1.3
          environment. LAT transport support will be restored in a future
          release.

          If you currently use any X terminal applications that rely on
          the DECwindows Motif interface to the LAT transport, HP strongly
          recommends that you remain with DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-6
          or earlier.

          If you have implemented a custom transport and want to migrate
          that transport to the DECwindows Motif Version 1.3 environment,
          contact your HP customer representative to develop a migration
          strategy.

          Motif transport interface.

          Software Requirements

          o  To run DECwindows Motif for Alpha Version 1.3, you must be
             running OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.3-1. This is the only version
             of the OpenVMS operating system that supports DECwindows
             Motif Version 1.3.

          o  The minimum memory required to install, boot, and log in is
             64 MB; 128 MB is highly recommended for more robust perfor-
             mance.
