DIGITAL February, 1998 Dear Customer: To continue our tradition of providing enhanced Storage Management software capability to our customers, DIGITAL offers this release of Archive/Backup System (ABS) for OpenVMS[TM], Version 2.2. This release has been separated from the Storage Library System (SLS) for OpenVMS software and is shipping under its own licenses. SLS licenses continue to be honored by ABS Version 2.2 to allow for easy conversion. ABS Version 2.2 has been designed to run on OpenVMS, Version 6.1 through 7.1 on both Alpha and VAX systems. You can use ABS Version 2.2 in a mixed-architecture, OpenVMS VAX and Alpha systems envi- ronment. ABS allows for "rolling" upgrades. This means that you can install ABS on your server and incrementally update your ABS clients. ABS Version 2.2 is a new release and contains the following fea- tures: o A new, easy-to-use GUI o Scratch/load capability o Fast tape positioning functionality o Tighter integration with Hierarchical Storage Management for OpenVMS Version 2.2 o Dynamic logicals for pre- and postprocessing commands o SLS to ABS conversion tool See the ABS Version 2.2 Release Notes for details. Contents of this Kit The enclosed kit contains the following items: o Archive/Backup System for Version 2.2 software for VAX and Alpha systems o Archive/Backup System for Version 2.2 documentation: - Archive/Backup System Version 2.2 for OpenVMS SPD 48.16 - Archive/Backup System Version 2.2 for OpenVMS Release Notes (online only) - Archive/Backup System Version 2.2 for OpenVMS Installation and Configuration Guide - Archive/Backup System Version 2.2 for OpenVMS Guide to Oper- ations - Archive/Backup System Version 2.2 for OpenVMS Command Refer- ence Guide o Media and Device Management Services Version 2.9B software for VAX and Alpha systems Prerequisite Software The following software is required for Archive/Backup System for OpenVMS Version 2.2: o OpenVMS Versions 6.1 through 7.1 for VAX and Alpha systems o Motif[R] Version 1.1 or 1.2 o POLYCENTER Scheduler Version 2.1B (provided in this kit) o DECnet-Plus or DECnet Phase IV o DIGITAL TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS (required for communication between the OpenVMS server and NT and UNIX clients) Note that Oracle Rdb is no longer a prerequisite for ABS. However, Oracle Rdb databases can still be backed up using ABS. Installation Requirements To use ABS Version 2.2, you must meet the the following require- ments: 1. Install the Media and Device Management Services (MDMS) Version 2.9B (included in this kit) per installation instructions prior to installing ABS. 2. Install POLYCENTER Scheduler (included in the ABS kit) per installation instructions prior to installing ABS. 3. Install ABS Version 2.2 per installation instructions. For_customers_who_want_to_run_SLS_and_ABS_on_the_same_system: 1. Install SLS Version 2.9B per instructions provided in the Stor- age Library System Version 2.9B Installation Guide. (The SLS installation procedure automatically installs the media man- ager.) 2. Configure SLS and MDMS according to the instructions in SLS documentation. 3. Install ABS Version 2.2 per installation instructions. Do not install MDMS as instructed in the Archive/Backup Service for OpenVMS Installation and Configuration Guide, For additional information, please refer to the product documenta- tion.
