DIGITAL Digital Equipment Corporation Embedded & Realtime Engineering 334 South Street, SHR3-1/C22 Shrewsbury, Massachusetts 01545-4165 December 1996 Dear Customer, Thank you for buying Diskless Driver for Digital UNIX Version 2.0. Diskless Driver for Digital UNIX is a layered product, and is an extension of Dataless Management Services (DMS). DMS is required on the server system for installation and use of Diskless Driver for Digital UNIX. In a dataless management environment, a server system maintains the root, /usr, and /var file systems for all client systems. The server maintains one copy of root for each client. The /usr file system is exported read only and is shared by all clients registered to the environment. Client systems have their own /var file system. All paging is done on the client's local disk. When used with DMS, Diskless Driver for Digital UNIX eliminates the need for a local disk. A Single Board Computer (SBC) or workstation can run Digital UNIX without a disk by booting over the network and paging to a server system using the Network File System (NFS[TM]). For operating system prerequistes, refer to the Diskless Driver for Digital UNIX Software Product Description (SPD 56.37.xx). A minimum of 48 MB of memory is required; Digital recommends a minimum of 64 MB of memory. Diskless Driver for Digital UNIX also requires that the following Digital UNIX software subsets be loaded on the system where you install Diskless Driver for Digital UNIX: o OSFBASE-the "Base System" subset o OSFCLINET-Basic Networking Services o OSFNFS-NFS[R] Utilities To install the Diskless Driver for Digital UNIX reference pages (manual pages), the OSFDCMT subset, Doc Tools for Manpages, must be installed on the system where you install Diskless Driver for Digital UNIX.
