For Digital UNIX the release notes are supplied in the following directories: /usr/lib/dbs/pcg/v31/doc/pcg311.release_notes (text version) /usr/lib/dbs/pcg/v31/doc/pcg311_release_notes.ps (PostScript version) <> The following list summarizes important information about the installation of the gateway for PC Data client. o Saveset Name 2 The savesets for the gateway for PC Data Version 3.1A for OpenVMS include both the client software and the server distribution file. The saveset names are as follows: For OpenVMS Alpha: LREDAVA031 For OpenVMS VAX: LREDVVA031 <> The client and server software for Digital UNIX are supplied in two different savesets: Client software: PCGBASE311 Server software: PCGSRV311 (for distribution to personal computers) <> o License requirements To install and run the gateway for PC Data, you must first register and load a License Product Authorization Key (Li- cense PAK) using the License Management Facility (LMF). The License PAK may be shipped along with the kit if you ordered the license and media together. Otherwise, it is shipped separately to a location based on your license order. <> If you have product licenses for DB Integrator Server and DEC SQL Development, and they are user-based licenses, then you will encounter additional questions in the installation procedure, as described in this letter. <> o Operating system requirement The Digital UNIX on Alpha operating system Version 3.0 or higher must be installed on your system before the gateway for PC Data client can be installed and used properly. <> The OpenVMS Alpha operating system Version 6.1 or the OpenVMS VAX operating system Version 5.5-2 or higher must be in- stalled on your system before the gateway for PC Data client can be installed and used properly. <> o Common Components requirement The Rdb Common Components Version 6.1 are automatically installed as part of the installation procedure for the gateway for PC Data client on UNIX. <> 3 The Rdb Common Components Version 6.1 must be installed on the system before the gateway for PC Data can be installed and used properly. Refer to the installation guide for in- structions. <> o DEC C/C++ requirement The DEC C/C++ Run-Time components may need to be installed on an OpenVMS VAX Version 5.5 or Version 6.0 system before Rdb Common Components Version 6.1 can be installed. Additional information is included in this letter. <> Installing DEC C/C++ Before installing the Common Components, you might need to in- stall the DEC C/C++ Run-Time Components Version 6.0 for OpenVMS VAX kit if the target installation system is running OpenVMS VAX Version 5.5 or Version 6.0. The DEC C/C++ Run-Time Com- ponents kit must be installed prior to the Common Components installation. The saveset containing the DEC C/C++ Run-Time Components kit is in the file AACRT060.A, and is included with the Rdb Version 6.1 for OpenVMS VAX kits. This kit is installed using the VMSINSTAL utility. The Common Components installation fails if the DEC C/C++ Run-Time Components kit is not already installed. Installing the DEC C/C++ Run-Time Components kit might have some implications for customer sites that run OpenVMS Version 5.5, 5.5-1, or 5.5-2 and develop applications written in C or C++. The DEC C/C++ Run-Time Components kit contains shareable image run-time components. When the DEC C/C++ Run-Time Components kit is installed on OpenVMS VAX Version 5.5, 5.5-1, or 5.5-2 systems, some of the shareable image run-time components replace older versions of existing OpenVMS components. This makes the installation of the DEC C/C++ Run-Time Components kit similar to an OpenVMS upgrade for sites that develop or distribute software for OpenVMS VAX Version 5.5, 5.5-1, or 5.5-2 systems. Please read the release notes that are supplied with the DEC C/C++ Run-Time Components kit before installation so that you fully understand these implications before installing the Common Components. <> Server Installation The gateway for PC Data server requires the following software and hardware components: o Hardware: - IBM(R)-compatible PC with a 386 microprocessor or higher - VGA or higher resolution monitor [SVGA recommended] - Mouse 4 - Hard disk space (approximate): Windows: 5.2MB (.2MB for PCG Server, 5MB for ODBC Pack 2 files) o Software: - Microsoft Windows V3.1 or Microsoft Windows NT V3.5 - Windows Sockets API (winsock) - ODBC data driver for each data source to be accessed (if not part of the ODBC Pack 2 drivers) - DEC DB Integrator V3.1 Distributing the DBI Gateway to PC Data Server The Gateway for PC Data server software is distributed with the Gateway for PC Data client software as a single self-extracting archive which should be copied to the personal computer which will be used as a server. The location of the archive depends on the operating system of the client software. o On OpenVMS systems the archive is placed at sys$library:pcdataserver31_ win16.exe after the client has been successfully installed. o On Digital UNIX systems the archive is placed at /usr/opt/PCGSRV311/shlib/pcdataserver31_win16.exe by setld after the server has been successfully installed. Follow these steps to distribute the server: o Copy the pcdataserver31_win16.exe file from the directory on the client node to the personal computer by whatever means allows you to copy in image mode and rename to a DOS format 8.3 name, such as dbipcgwy.exe. One such method would be to use FTP from the personal computer to move the file. Sample FTP commands to do this would be similar to the following example: FTP> open USERNAME: PASSWORD: FTP> binary FTP> cd FTP> get pcdataserver31_win16.exe C:\pcdata\dbipcgwy.exe FTP> close FTP> bye Or, you can distribute the file from the client system to the personal computer with FTP commands similar to the following example: FTP> open USERNAME: PASSWORD: FTP> binary FTP> lcd FTP> put pcdataserver31_win16.exe c:\pcdata\dbipcgwy.exe FTP> close FTP> bye 5 o Once the self-extracting archive is copied to a personal computer hard disk, you must give the administrator of the personal computer the following information necessary to expand the archive: The administrator must extract the archive by running the just copied file from the DOS prompt. A sample command to do this is: C:\PCDATA>dbipcgwy The archive then expands into two subdirectories. The server subdirectory contains all the files necessary to set up the Gateway for PC Data server. The ODBC subdirec- tory contains all the optional files necessary to set up an ODBC environment on the personal computer. The personal computer administrator must follow the steps in the readme file found in the server subdirectory in order to install the gateway for PC Data server. Acknowledgments The dbipcgwy.exe self-extracting executable file was built using LHA Version 2.13, Copyright [TM] Haruyasu Yoshizaki, 1988-91.
