Compaq DECwindows Motif[R] for OpenVMS[TM] Alpha[TM] and OpenVMS VAX[TM] Version 1.2-5 Cover Letter December 1998 Dear DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Customer, Compaq is pleased to provide you with the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 for OpenVMS VAX and DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 for OpenVMS Alpha products. Except where noted, the information in this cover letter applies to both products. New Features DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 for OpenVMS Alpha and OpenVMS VAX provides the features contained in Version 1.2-4. Some of the most significant new features in Version 1.2-5 include Year 2000 enhancements and the ability to coexist in the same environment with Extended File Specifications (EFS). Year 2000 Enhancements DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 for OpenVMS contains the Year 2000 enhancements that originally shipped in the ALPMOTF03_U4012 and VAXMOTF02_U4012 kits. These enhancements are the result of a rigorous and comprehensive analysis and testing of the entire OpenVMS operating system. For a full description of the Year 2000 enhancements, see the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 for OpenVMS Alpha and OpenVMS VAX Release Notes, available in online format on the media. For more information about the OpenVMS Year 2000 Initiative, including how you can test your environment and applications for Year 2000 readiness, please visit the OpenVMS Year 2000 web page at: http://www.openvms.digital.com/openvms/products/year-2000 Extended File Specifications Extended File Specifications (EFS) optionally extends OpenVMS file names and attributes to match those of Windows 95 and NT. When coupled with the DIGITAL[TM] Advanced Server, EFS allows OpenVMS systems to act as fully functional file servers to Windows 95[R] and Windows[R] NT[TM] clients. In addition, EFS allows OpenVMS system managers to perform OpenVMS system management functions on Windows NT and Windows 95 files from an OpenVMS account. This functionality is intended for use primarily with DIGITAL Advanced Server, but it is possible to create and manipulate EFS extended file names using a subset of DCL commands. For a listing of these commands, see Chapter 4 of the OpenVMS Version 7.2 New Features Manual. For more information about EFS, see the OpenVMS Version 7.2 cover letters. Documentation The following DECwindows Motif documentation has been updated for the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 for OpenVMS release: o DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 for OpenVMS Release Notes (in .TXT format in saveset A on the media kit) o DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 for OpenVMS Installation Guide o Guide to the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 for OpenVMS CD-ROM Release Notes Upgrade problem after installing OpenVMS PCSI remedial kit After installaton of the DEC-AXPVMS-VMS62TO71U2_PCSI-V0100-4.PCSI remedial kit, your system will use the new features provided by this version of the POLYCENTER Software Installation utility. If a layered product is installed that makes use of this new functionality, then it may not be possible to revert back to an older version of the utility. This restriction occurs because there may be records in the software product database that the older version of the utility will not be able to interpret. This scenario may occur after an OpenVMS upgrade to a version of OpenVMS prior to Version 7.1-2. For example, this situation occurs if you: 1. Install this remedial kit on OpenVMS V6.2, V6.2-1H1, V6.2- 1H2, V6.2-1H3, V7.1, V7.1-1H1, or V7.1-1H2. 2. Install DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Version 1.2-5. 3. Upgrade to (or reinstall) OpenVMS V6.2, V6.2-1H1, V6.2-1H2, V6.2-1H3, V7.1, V7.1-1H1, or V7.1-1H2. 3 Upgrading to any of the versions listed in item 3 may fail (or other PRODUCT command operations on the product database may fail) with one of the following errors: %SYSTEM-F-ACCVIO, access violation, ... %PCSI-E-UNSDOCENC, unsupported product document encoding version To prevent these failures after installing this remedial kit and the DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS product, perform the following steps: 1. Remove DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS using the following command: $ PRODUCT REMOVE DWMOTIF 2. Upgrade to (or reinstall) OpenVMS Version 6.2, 6.2-1H1, 6.2- 1H2, 6.2-1H3, 7.1, 7.1-1H1, or 7.1-1H2. 3. Reinstall this remedial kit. 4. Reinstall DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS. This workaround is not needed if you are upgrading to OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.1-2 or higher, or if you are upgrading to Open- VMS VAX Version 7.2 or higher. OpenVMS Versions 7.1-2 and 7.2 already include the functionality provided by this remedial kit. DECwindows or Desktop applications may disappear when setting home session (New Desktop only) In the New Desktop Style Manager, selecting Startup and then Set Home Session may cause applications that you previously started using the Application Manager to disappear. This can happen if you start these applications with the Application Manager and then close the Application Manager before setting your home session. To work around this problem, keep the Application Manager window open. Delay during installation of DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 from CD-ROM When you install DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 from the CD-ROM, you will encounter a delay of a few minutes after the following message appears: This product uses the PAK: DW-MOTIF This delay is normal behavior. During this time, the installa- tion is in progress. The following message is then displayed, indicating that the installation is proceeding normally: 4 Checking values of system parameters... ©Compaq Computer Corporation. 1998.
