Hewlett-Packard Read Before Installing or Using HP Fortran Version 7.6 for OpenVMS Alpha Systems AV-PU3BQ-TE This letter explains the Version 7.6 release of the HP Fortran (formerly Compaq Fortran) product for OpenVMS Alpha systems. Product Terminology This letter uses the following new or changed product name terminology: o "HP Fortran" refers to the product that was previously called Compaq Fortran. It also refers to the HP Fortran language that fully supports the Fortran 95 and Fortran 90 standards. o "HP Fortran 77" refers to the product that was previously called Compaq Fortran 77. Product Packaging Information HP Fortran Version 7.6 for OpenVMS Alpha Systems includes the HP Fortran compiler, the HP Fortran 77 compiler, their shared components (such as the HP Fortran run-time library system and the FORSYSDEF.TLB library), and the Compaq Extended Math Library (CXML). HP Fortran supports nearly all HP Fortran 77 extensions. For more information about HP Fortran and HP Fortran 77 compati- bility features, see the compatibility appendix in the Compaq Fortran User Manual for OpenVMS Alpha Systems. Product Authorization Key (PAK) Information Before you can install HP Fortran, a License Management Facility (LMF) Product Authorization Key (PAK) must be registered and loaded (see the HP Fortran Installation Guide for OpenVMS Alpha Systems). Both compilers in HP Fortran Version 7.6 recognize the Product Authorization Key (PAK). For example, if you have an HP Fortran 77 PAK, you can begin using the HP Fortran compiler, and vice versa. Copyright © 2003 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. Installation Information Installing HP Fortran requires the OpenVMS Alpha operating system, Version 7.1 or higher. You must install the HP Fortran Run-Time Library (RTL) provided on the HP Fortran kit, which is more recent than the HP Fortran RTL shipped with the OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.3 operating system. Install the HP Fortran RTL kit before you install HP Fortran. To install the HP Fortran RTL kit, the HP Fortran compiler, and/or the HP Fortran 77 compiler, use the POLYCENTER Software Installation (PCSI) software (PRODUCT command) as described in the HP Fortran Installation Guide for OpenVMS Alpha Systems. This guide also describes how to install CXML. You can install CXML either before or after HP Fortran. CXML does not require a Product Authorization Key (PAK). As described in the HP Fortran Installation Guide for OpenVMS Alpha Systems, you must add a line to your system startup file to execute the following HP Fortran startup command procedure: SYS$STARTUP:FORT$STARTUP.COM If you install CXML, you must add a line to your system startup file to execute the following CXML startup command procedure: SYS$STARTUP:CXML$STARTUP.COM For information about parameters to the CXML startup line, see the HP Fortran Installation Guide for OpenVMS Alpha Systems. If you will be using 64-bit static addressing on a system running OpenVMS Version 7.2 or later, you should install an additional software kit (ADB074) that allows use of enhanced 64-bit tools, including OpenVMS Debugger (DEBUG64) and Linker (LINKER64). For more information, see the HP Fortran Installa- tion Guide for OpenVMS Alpha Systems. HP Fortran and CXML Release Notes The HP Fortran release notes contain a summary of new fea- tures, known problems, restrictions, incompatibilities, and installation-related instructions for the HP Fortran and HP Fortran 77 compilers, their common run-time system, and other components. To read the release notes before installing HP Fortran, fol- low the instructions in the HP Fortran Installation Guide for OpenVMS Alpha Systems. After installing HP Fortran, you can find the text version and PostScript versions of the release notes in: SYS$HELP:FORTRAN.RELEASE_NOTES SYS$HELP:FORTRAN_RELEASE_NOTES.PS 2 CXML release notes and the Compaq Extended Math Library Refer- ence Guide are also provided as files in the SYS$HELP directory. For a list of CXML documentation files, enter the following command: $ DIRECTORY SYS$HELP:CXML*.* HP Fortran Product Information HP Fortran conforms to the Fortran 95 standard and the Fortran 90 Standard (ISO/IEC 1539-1:1997(E) and ANSI X3.198-1992) and contains most but not all of the HP Fortran 77 extensions to the FORTRAN-77 standard. HP Fortran for OpenVMS Alpha Systems Version 7.6 and HP Fortran 77 Version 7.6 for OpenVMS Alpha Systems provide upward compati- bility with previous versions of Compaq Fortran and corrections to problems discovered since Version 7.5 was released. The command names for the two compilers are: o For HP Fortran, the FORTRAN (or F90) command o For HP Fortran 77, the FORTRAN command with the /OLD_F77 qualifier HP Fortran Kit for Existing Customers Existing HP Fortran customers with a service update contract automatically receive the HP Fortran Version 7.6 for OpenVMS Alpha kit. This kit contains the media CD-ROM (QA-MV1AA-W8) and HP Fortran documentation that has been revised since its prior release. For Version 7.6, the installation guide and this letter were revised.
