It enables users of one network to exchange mail with users of the other. Before you can install MRS you must: o Check that the distribution kit contains everything listed on the bill of materials included with the kit (see Section 1.2). o Ensure that your system has the prerequisite hardware and software for MRS (see Section 1.3). o Prepare your system for installation (see Section 1.4). 1.2 Checking the Distribution Kit Make sure that your MRS kit contains everything listed on the bill of materials included with the kit. The distribution kit should contain either an optical disk or the following: o A magnetic tape, or a tape cartridge o A Software Product Description (SPD) o A System Support Addendum (SSA) o The MRS documentation o The Message Router documentation If anything is missing from the distribution kit, contact your Digital representative. Preparing to Install MRS 1-1 1.3 Prerequisite Hardware and Software To install and successfully run MRS, you must have the following prerequisite hardware and software: o OpenVMS Version 5.5-2 o Either DECnet/VAX Phase IV or DECnet/OSI Version 5.6B for OpenVMS VAX o One of the following: - DECnet SNA Gateway - CT Version 2.1 - DECnet SNA Gateway - ST Version 1.2 - VMS/SNA Version 2.1 The DECnet SNA Gateway can be installed anywhere in your DECnet[TM] network. However, if you use VMS/SNA software, it must be installed on the same node as MRS. o DECnet SNA APPC/LU6.2 (Advanced Program to Program Communication) Programming Interface for OpenVMS Version 2.2 o Message Router Version 3.3 on the node where MRS is installed. o At least 4300 blocks of free disk space available during the installation on the system disk. o After MRS V1.3 has been installed, 4200 blocks of free space are required permanently on the target disk. o A registered Product Authorisation Key (PAK) for MRS. The name of the MRS PAK is MESSAGE-ROUTER-SNADS. The OpenVMS License Management Utility Manual describes how to register the PAK. The OpenVMS system on which you are installing the Gateway must have the following software installed on it: o Network Support (SYS$LIBRARY:DYNSWITCH.EXE) o Incoming Remote File Access (SYS$SYSTEM:FAL.EXE) o Incoming Remote Terminal (SYS$SYSTEM:REMACP.EXE) o Network Test (SYS$SYSTEM:DTSEND.EXE) 1-2 Preparing to Install MRS o Remote Task Loading (SYS$SYSTEM:HLD.EXE) o RMS Analyse and FDL Editor utilities (SYS$SYSTEM:ANALYZRMS.EXE) o Macro Library (SYS$LIBRARY:STARLET.MLB) o Macro Assembler (SYS$SYSTEM:MACRO32.EXE) o File Access Control List utilities (SYS$SYSTEM:ACLEDT.EXE) o Print and Batch Queue utilities (SYS$BATCH) o VMSmail If any of the above software is not installed on your OpenVMS system, use the OpenVMS Tailoring Utility, VMSTAILOR, to install the missing software. Refer to the OpenVMS Version 5.5 Upgrade and Installation Manual for details of VMSTAILOR. 1.4 Preparing Your System for Installation Complete the following steps to prepare your system for installation: 1. Check that the MRS PAK is registered and loaded, by typing the following command: $ LICENSE LIST MESSAGE-ROUTER-SNADS /FULL The MRS license should be displayed. If it is not displayed, you need to register and load the MRS PAK. For details of how to do this, see the OpenVMS License Management Utility Manual. 2. Keep a log of the installation by typing: $ SET HOST 0 /LOG=filename where filename is the name of the file that is to contain the installation log. 3. Log in to the SYSTEM account on the operator console. 4. Back up your system disk. If a system failure occurs at a critical point during the installation, some files may be corrupted and you therefore need a backup copy of your system disk from which to recover. Preparing to Install MRS 1-3 5. Ensure that there are no active users on the system. Do this as follows: 1. Enter the command: $ SHOW USERS This command lists the active users currently on the system. 2. If there are any users active on the system, ask them to log out by typing: $ REPLY /BELL /USERNAME "PLEASE LOG OUT" 6. Choose a password for the MRS account. The password must be at least eight characters long. 7. Note the name of the device where the distribution medium is to be mounted. If you define a logical name for the device where MRS is to be installed (that is, the device that holds the MB$ directory, do not use the logical name MB$DEV. This is used internally by MRS during installation. If you do use this logical name, the installation fails. 8. If you are running any MAILbus components on your node or cluster, you must shut them down before installing MRS using the following command: $ SYS$MANAGER:MB$CONTROL STOP=(ER,...,TS,DDS,MS) Include in this command the identifiers of any Gateways installed on your node. If you are reinstalling or upgrading MRS, you must also stop MRS if it is running. If you are installing MRS on a VAXcluster[TM] or Local Area VAXcluster, complete the further preparations described in Section 1.5. Otherwise, turn to Chapter 2 to install MRS. 1-4 Preparing to Install MRS 1.5 Preparing to Install MRS on a VAXcluster or Local Area VAXcluster You can run MRS on any OpenVMS Version 5.5-2 VAXcluster or Local Area VAXcluster configuration. For each MRS in the cluster, you need to register and load your MRS Product Authorization Key (PAK), using the OpenVMS License Management Utility. The OpenVMS License Management Utility Manual describes how to register and load your PAK. In a VAXcluster, all the nodes may share a single SYSUAF.DAT file and DECnet database or one group of nodes may share one set of resources, and another group may share a different set of resources. Also, in a cluster, there may be a single system disk or multiple system disks. Irrespective of how your cluster is defined, there must be only one MRS environment within the cluster. However, MRS does not need to be installed and configured on all nodes in a cluster. Choose the set of nodes that you want MRS to run on, and make sure you install it such that the installation satisfies the following two constraints: o It modifies all the SYSUAF.DAT files and DECnet databases that are shared by those nodes o It modifies all the system disks that are used by those nodes To satisfy both of these constraints, you may need to perform more than one installation. However, all the installations of MRS on a cluster must use the same MRS environment, that is, the same MB$ directory structure and associated data files. You are recommended to install MRS on the primary Message Router node in the cluster. This node varies depending on the configuration of the cluster. It has most significance where there is no cluster alias defined or where Message Router is configured not to use the cluster alias. Refer to the VAX Message Router Configuration Guide for more information about the primary Message Router node in a cluster. Preparing to Install MRS 1-5 When you have installed MRS, you must configure it. As part of configuration you can choose whether to enable the use of the cluster alias, if one is defined. See the VAX Message Router/S Gateway Management Guide for more information about configuring MRS. 1-6 Preparing to Install MRS 2 ________________________________________________________________ Installing MRS This chapter explains how to install MRS. Before you install MRS, you must make the preparations described in Chapter 1. 2.1 Overview of the Installation MRS is installed using VMSINSTAL, a command procedure used to install optional software products on a VMS operating system. During the installation, VMSINSTAL displays a series of questions on your screen. You simply type your answer to each question. Section 2.3 describes each question and explains how to answer it. If you are not sure how to answer a question, enter a question mark (?) and press RETURN. Help information is displayed on the screen. When you invoke VMSINSTAL, do not use the alternate root option, OPTIONS R. During the installation, you are asked whether you want to run the installation verification procedure (IVP). If requested, the IVP runs automatically when the installation has finished. The IVP is described in Section 2.4. The installation procedure typically takes 30 minutes to complete, depending on the type of distribution medium and hardware that you have. Installing MRS 2-1 2.2 Error Handling If you receive an error message during the installation, check that you have answered the question correctly. If you make a mistake while typing your answer, the question is repeated so that you can enter the information correctly. If the error message is displayed again, press CTRL/Y to exit from the installation procedure. Examine the error message and perform any necessary recovery operations. For example, if the message indicates that account quotas are too low, increase the quota on your account and then start the installation again. If the installation fails again at the same point, stop the installation by pressing CTRL/Y. If you have a service contract with Digital, contact your Customer Support Center. Otherwise, contact your local Digital office to arrange for a service contract. 2.3 The Installation Procedure Install MRS as follows: 1. Log in to the SYSTEM account, and type the command: $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL MRS013 device OPTIONS N where: o MRS013 is the name of the product being installed. o device is the name of the device where the distribution medium is to be mounted. o OPTIONS N provides the option of reading or printing the on-line release notes. If you are reinstalling MRS, you can omit the parameter OPTIONS N, providing you have already read the release notes. 2. The installation procedure then starts. 2-2 Installing MRS 2.4 The Installation Verification Procedure If you requested it during the installation, the IVP runs automatically when the installation procedure is finished. The IVP verifies that the installation was successful by checking that all the MRS files are stored in the correct directories. When the IVP is finished, the following message is displayed: The Message Router/S Gateway V1.3 IVP has completed successfully If you performed the installation from the console device, you must remove the distribution volume from the console device and replace it with the console volume. The following is displayed: Please mount the console volume on device: * Are you ready? where device is the device name that you specified during the installation procedure. When you have replaced the console volume, type YES. The system confirms that the console volume has been mounted, and exits from VMSINSTAL. The following messages are displayed: %MOUNT-I-MOUNTED, CONSOLE mounted on _device: VMSINSTAL procedure done at hh:mm $ When the IVP has run successfully, do the post-installation tasks as described in Section 2.5. If you do not want to run the IVP automatically when MRS is installed, you can run it separately at a later date by entering the following command: $ @MB$CVPDIR:MRP$IVP Installing MRS 2-3 2.5 Post-Installation Tasks When the installation is complete, you need to do the following tasks to make MRS ready for use: o Amend the MRS resource quota values within the MRS account in the user authorization file. You only need to do this if an MRS account existed prior to starting the installation. Table 2-1 shows the minimum values for the MRS account quotas. You can modify the account quotas using the OpenVMS Authorize Utility. You need to log out and log in again for the new values to take effect. Table 2-1 MRS Account Quotas __________________________________________________________ Quota Value __________________________________________________________ BYTLM 180000 ENQLM 400 WSEXTENT 8192 FILLM 200 BIOLM 50 DIOLM 12 PEGFLQUOTA 30000 TQELM 20 WSQUOTA 2048 _________________________________________________________ o You must add information about users of Digital mail systems who want to use MRS to the Directory Service component of Message Router. The VAX Message Router /S Gateway Planning Guide describes this information and the VAX Message Router/S Gateway Management Guide describes how to add entries to the Directory Service. o Collect the information you will need to configure MRS, as described in the VAX Message Router/S Gateway Planning Guide. 2-4 Installing MRS o Configure MRS as described in the VAX Message Router/S Gateway Management Guide. o Start Message Router and any other MAILbus components by typing the command: $ @SYS$MANAGER:MB$CONTROL START=(MS,DDS,TS,...,ER) Do not include MRS until you have configured it. 2.6 Disk Space for the MRS Software When you have completed the installation, the MRS software occupies about 4000 blocks of disk space. In addition, Digital recommend that 4200 blocks of free disk space be made available for use by the MRS account. If necessary, you can alter this quota to suit changes in the volume of message traffic. Appendix B lists the files that are created for MRS at installation, and the operational files created when MRS is in use.
