Document Structure This document includes the following chapters: o Chapter 1, Executive Summary o Chapter 2, New Features o Chapter 3, Problems Addressed in this Release o Chapter 4, Information for UNIX supporting host systems, including installation notes and known problems 1 ________________________________________________________________ Executive Summary These release notes are for the following software: o PrintServer Software for UNIX, Version V5.2 This product supports the following printers: o PrintServer 17 o PrintServer 17/600 o PrintServer 20 o turbo PrintServer 20 o PrintServer 32 o PrintServer 32 plus o PrintServer 40 plus 2 ________________________________________________________________ New Features 2.1 Operating System updates PrintServer Software for UNIX has been updated to support the following operating system versions: o Digital UNIX Version 4.0B o HP-UX Version 10.20 o IBM-AIX Version 4.2.1 o Solaris/SPARC Version 2.5.1 o SunOS Version 4.1.4 3 ________________________________________________________________ Problems Addressed in this Release This section describes previous known problems that have been fixed in this release. 3.1 The lpspr print formatting utility o Force each new file to begin printing on a new sheet for multi-file duplex jobs. Previously, subsequent files were printed on the next available sheet side, causing the start of one file to be on the reverse side of the last page of the previous file. o Allow printing ANSI data from a pipe. Previously, an error resulted due the failure to rewind the input stream during auto-detection of the input data. ANSI print data can now be fed to lpspr using an input pipe, but only if the data type is explicitly specified using the "-Dansi" command line option. o Improved handling of A4 media. Users often omitted specifying the A4 PostScript profile when printing on A4 media. To make this operation less error-prone, lpspr now defaults to using the A4 profile when an A4 paper size is request. Now you only have to specify the "-Sa4" command line option to get the proper results on A4 media. As before, the user can always override the default PostScript profile by specifying the profile path using the "-P" command line option. o Landscape printing has been fixed such that the page width is no longer forcibly set to 132. Any specified page width is now supported when landscape printing is specified using the "-Oland" command line option. o Fixed a problem where bad PostScript was generated in a very data-dependent situation. 3.2 The xlpsprint Motif print formatting and submission tool o The default "number-up" parameter was always set to one, and did not allow a value of zero. As a result, a border was always rendered around each page image. The tool now defaults to a value of zero, which does not render the page border. o Landscape printing has been fixed such that the page width is no longer forcibly set to 132. Any specified page width is now supported when landscape printing is specified. o All ASCII conversion parameters have been changed to allow a maximum value of 999. 3.3 The xlpsrc Motif remote console o Spurious communications errors encountered on some versions of Digital UNIX systems have been fixed. 3.4 The xlpsprism Motif printer status monitoring tool o Icon button widths were erroneously wide in some CDE environments, causing other Motif layout problems and text truncation. The XLpsprism X resource file now explicitly specifies all font sets to eliminate this problem. 3.5 All X Motif tools o Certain CDE color schemes (including the default Digital UNIX CDE color scheme) caused text to be illegible on the PrintServer Software Motif tools due to poor contrast between background and foreground colors (such as white text on a light cyan background). The X resource files for each of these tools have been changed to explicitly specify background and foreground color to eliminate this problem. 4 ________________________________________________________________ UNIX Release Notes This section provides information about installing and using the PrintServer Software. Read this section and the installation guide before installing PrintServer Software for UNIX, Version V5.2. ________________________Note________________________ The Digital UNIX operating system was formerly known As OSF/1 AXP. ____________________________________________________ 4.1 Installing on Digital UNIX Loading PrintServer Server for UNIX, V5.2 (LPSBASE520) requires that any current LPSBASE510 subset be deleted before installing LPSBASE520. ________________________Note________________________ You must first stop all running clients, including any print clients, management clients, and the lpsbootd daemon. ____________________________________________________ You may then use lpsdeinstall if you do NOT wish to retain your current LPS Object Database (/etc/lpsodb); the lpsdeinstall script will remove all components of the current LPS installation, including the LPS Object Database. Use this command to invoke lpsdeinstall: # /usr/opt/LPS/lpsdeinstall Typically you would want to retain the current LPS Object Database when updating the LPS software; that way the new version can immediately use your current object definitions. To remove the current version without removing your LPS Object Database, use the following command: # setld -d LPSBASE510 4.2 PrintServer-resident software unchanged PrintServer Software for UNIX, V5.2 has not changed the version of software resident in the PrintServer printer. Hence, the remote console "config" command still reports: PrintServer Software: V5.1-15 # # #
