COMPAQ Software Product Description ___________________________________________________________________ PRODUCT NAME: DECwindows[TM] SNA 3270 Terminal SPD 31.58.03 Emulator for OpenVMS[TM], Version 2.1 This SPD describes DECwindows[TM] SNA 3270 Terminal Emulator for OpenVMS[TM], which is available for the OpenVMS Alpha and OpenVMS VAX[TM] platforms. All information applies to both platforms unless otherwise indicated. DESCRIPTION The DECwindows SNA 3270 Terminal Emulator for OpenVMS (DECwindows TE) is a software product that allows users of supported, OpenVMS based Compaq workstations and servers and X-terminals in a DECnet[TM] or TCP /IP network to access and use applications running on an IBM[R] main- frame. The product runs in the DECwindows Motif[R] environment. Access to the IBM host-based applications system from OpenVMS systems is via one of the following products: TCP/IP or DECnet Connections o DIGITAL SNA Peer Server o DIGITAL SNA Domain Gateway o DIGITAL SNA Access Server for Windows NT[R] DECnet Only Connections o DECnet SNA Gateway for Synchronous Transport o DECnet SNA Gateway for Channel Transport November 1998 AE-NJ69D-TE o OpenVMS SNA, an OpenVMS VAX layered product that supports local ac- cess as well as remote DECnet clients Use of DECwindows TE is supported on the following systems and envi- ronments: o Compaq Workstations/Servers (Alpha and VAX) o Compaq X-Terminal Product Set (VXT1XXX and VXT2XXX) Communicating Between IBM and Compaq Systems In normal operation, IBM systems transfer a formatted screen much like a "form" or "panel" to the IBM 3270 block mode terminal. Terminal users fill in required data and the 3270 terminal transmits the completed form to the IBM host as a single unit. In contrast to this "block-mode" approach, Compaq terminals and workstations send data to OpenVMS host systems one character at a time. Using the DECwindows TE enables Com- paq's character-mode terminals to emulate IBM's block-mode style of computing by buffering outbound IBM data in the DECnet host system's memory before displaying it, as a single block, on the Compaq termi- nal. The Compaq terminal then transmits the screen form to the IBM host system via an SNA gateway or OpenVMS SNA. Translating ASCII and EBCDIC Data Compaq systems use ASCII code to represent data, while IBM systems use EBCDIC. DECwindows TE contains built-in translation tables that con- vert ISO Latin character input (given in ASCII code) to IBM multina- tional EBCDIC code for transfer through the SNA gateway or OpenVMS SNA. Users of DECwindows TE can modify these translation tables to fit most language needs. 2 Starting the DECwindows TE Users can invoke the DECwindows TE from the OpenVMS command line or choose a custom menu selection on FileView or Session Manager. Users invoking DECwindows TE from an OpenVMS command line use the SNATERM command, along with DECwindows qualifiers to specify the IBM system and system resources to which they want to connect. While the DECwindows TE utility is running, its display window is formatted in the same style as a 3270 display station with the option of 3270, 3279-S3G, or 3192-G terminal types. Exiting DECwindows TE returns control to the OpenVMS Operating System. Features o Provides a DECwindows Motif style graphical user interface (GUI). INSTALLATION Only experienced customers should attempt installation of this prod- uct. Installation services from Compaq are recommended for all other customers. These services provide for installation of the software prod- uct by an experienced software specialist. Customer Responsibilities Before Compaq installation of the software, the customer must have: o Previously installed all prerequisite software and hardware, in- cluding terminals and the SNA gateway or OpenVMS SNA. 6 o Obtained, installed, and demonstrated as operational any modems and other equipment and facilities necessary to interface to Compaq's communications equipment. o Generated, to Compaq's satisfaction, any necessary IBM host soft- ware that will be communicating with the SNA gateway or OpenVMS SNA and DECwindows TE. o Made available for a reasonable period of time, as mutually agreed by Compaq and the customer, all hardware, communications facili- ties, and terminals that are to be used during installation. Delays caused by any failure to meet these responsibilities will be charged at the prevailing rate for time and materials. Successful use of this product requires that: o The customer be prepared to work with both Compaq and IBM systems personnel to coordinate the preinstallation activities. o The customer be capable of modifying IBM component-generation pa- rameters to support either the SNA gateway or OpenVMS SNA, or the DECwindows TE software. PREREQUISITE SUPPORT For DECwindows SNA 3270 Terminal Emulator for OpenVMS to be supported by Compaq, the customer must have a Compaq supported SNA gateway or OpenVMS SNA configuration. HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS Processors Supported For Alpha Systems: o Alpha processor as specified in the OpenVMS Operating System for Alpha and VAX Software Product Description (SPD 25.01.xx). o Any properly configured SNA gateway. 7 For VAX Systems: o VAX, MicroVAX[TM], VAXstation[TM], or VAXserver[TM] configuration as specified in the OpenVMS Operating System for Alpha and VAX Soft- ware Product Description (SPD 25.01.xx). o Any properly configured SNA gateway. An alternative is to run OpenVMS SNA software on the same VAX system as the DECwindows TE product. Processors Not Supported DECwindows TE is not supported on the following processors: VAX-11/730, VAX-11/750, VAX-11/780, and VAX-11/785. Processor Restrictions A TK50 Tape Drive is required for standalone MicroVAX 2000 and VAXstation 2000 systems. Personal computers as server machines are not supported. Disk Space Requirements (Block Cluster Size = 1) Disk space required for installation: OpenVMS Alpha 5,110 blocks (2.56 MB) OpenVMS VAX 4,195 blocks (2.11 MB) Disk space required for use (permanent) on client system: OpenVMS Alpha 163 blocks (82 KB) OpenVMS VAX 143 blocks (72 KB) 8 Disk space required for use (permanent) on server system: OpenVMS Alpha 2,915 blocks (1.47 MB) OpenVMS VAX 2,000 blocks (1.01 MB) These counts refer to the disk space required on the system disk. The sizes are approximate; actual sizes may vary depending on the user's system environment, configuration, and software options. Memory Requirements for DECwindows Support The minimum supported memory for this application running in a stand- alone DECwindows environment with both the client and server execut- ing on that same system is 4 MB. The performance and memory usage of DECwindows applications are par- ticularly sensitive to system configuration. Less memory may be re- quired on the client system (the system where the software is installed and executed) if the server (the component that displays the appli- cation) resides on another system. More memory may be required on a system with several applications running or may be desirable to im- prove the performance of an application. The minimum memory supported is 4 MB. However, additional memory im- proves performance. The memory size suggested for most typical hard- ware configurations is a minimum of 6 MB.
