Compaq Software Product Description ___________________________________________________________________ PRODUCT NAME: 2780/3780 Protocol Emulator for OpenVMS[TM] Alpha[TM], SPD 64.57.02 Version 2.0 DESCRIPTION The 2780/3780 Protocol Emulator (PE) on OpenVMS Alpha emulates the syn- chronous line protocol used by an IBM[R] 2780 or a 3780 remote batch terminal. The emulator provides the user with a mechanism for trans- ferring data between the host operating system and another system equipped to handle 2780 or 3780 communications protocols. The emulator can be invoked interactively or via a command procedure. The emulator's command set is designed to let several users share a communication line. With the appropriate modem options, the emulator is capable of automatically answering incoming calls. Sophisticated operations can be performed by a combination of command procedures, allowing, for example, unattended operation. Unattended operations include the ability to detect an incoming call, to estab- lish the connection, and then to transmit, and to receive files and recover from transmission failures, all without the intervention of an operator. The PE supports several data formats; a particular format is selected via a user’s command. Users can select various control translation schemes, various record lengths or card images, ASCII EBCDIC translation, and BSC transparency. The OpenVMS record management facility performs all file I/O. Data can be sent to files representing print and punch streams; the format of files sent to one "stream" can differ from the format sent to the other "stream." July 1999 AE-QZZPC-TE 2780/3780 Protocol Emulator for OpenVMS[TM] Alpha[TM],SPD 64.57.02 Version 2.0 Features The following IBM remote job batch terminal features are supported by the OpenVMS Alpha 2780/3780 PE: o 2780 extended and multiple record option o Variable horizontal forms control o BSC transparency o 3780 space compression o BSC point-to-point configurations (multipoint is not supported) The product can run up to 8 physical lines, each with a different set of line attributes at speeds between 1200 bps and 19200 bps per line. This Alpha product has an interface similar to the previous VAX[TM] product: 2780/3780 Protocol Emulators for OpenVMS VAX. This enables existing 2780/3780 protocol emulator users on VAX to migrate to Al- pha systems with ease. INSTALLATION Customer Responsibilities In some cases, the X.25 network supplier may impose restrictions, lim- itations, or requirements on the proposed network configuration. The customer must ensure these are understood and adhered to for each net- work. Before installation of the software, the customer should: o Previously have installed all requisite software and hardware, in- cluding terminals. o Obtain, install, and demonstrate as operational any modems and other equipment and facilities necessary to interface to communication equipment. 2 2780/3780 Protocol Emulator for OpenVMS[TM] Alpha[TM],SPD 64.57.02 Version 2.0 o Demonstrate equivalence of operation for modems other than Bell 208A, 208B, 209, 212A synchronous modems, or, in Europe, employ only PTT approved modems. o Make available for a reasonable period of time, as mutually agreed by Compaq and the customer, all hardware, communication facilities and terminals that are to be used during a Compaq supervised in- stallation. HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS Processors Supported All OpenVMS Alpha host machines with at least one PCI or TURBOchan- nel[TM] slot available.
