COMPAQ Software Product Description ___________________________________________________________________ PRODUCT NAME: OpenVMS/Thai Alpha Operating System, SPD 46.76.05 Version 7.2 DESCRIPTION OpenVMS/Thai Alpha operating system Version 7.2 is an extension to Open- VMS Operating system Version 7.2 to provide a computing environment in both English and Thai languages. While keeping full compatibility with OpenVMS, OpenVMS/Thai Alpha extends and enhances the system util- ities and environment of OpenVMS to process Thai characters. Thai lan- guage specific utilities are included to address special requirements which are not provided in OpenVMS Alpha. In addition, OpenVMS/Thai Al- pha forms the base platform for Thai language application development. OpenVMS/Thai Alpha supports Thai data representation that conforms to the Thai Industrial Standard 620-2533 (TIS 620-2533) of the Thai In- dustrial Standards Institute, Ministry of Industry, defined in 2533 (1990). This document describes only the components of OpenVMS/Thai Alpha which has been extended, enhanced or added to OpenVMS. For further details of general components of OpenVMS V7.2, refer to SPD (25.01.xx). FEATURES OpenVMS/Thai Alpha provides the following Thai processing features in addition to the base functionality of OpenVMS. MAY 1999 OpenVMS/Thai Alpha Operating System, SPD 46.76.05 Version 7.2 New Feature on World-Wide PostScript Printing Subsystem Starting from this version of OpenVMS/Thai, a World-Wide PostScript Printing Subsystem (WWPPS) is provided. WWPPS is a generic text-to- PostScript converter that converts various single-byte and multi-byte characters to printable PostScript, and submit to PostScript printer through OpenVMS Print Symbiont. Please refer to OpenVMS/Thai Alpha V7.2 Release Notes for details. User Environment OpenVMS/Thai Alpha provides the following features for general users: Thai Character I/O Support Input/Output of Thai and ASCII characters are supported on Thai ter- minals/printers. The Thai terminal driver provides advanced line edit- ing support for Thai and ASCII characters. DCL Command Language Support OpenVMS/Thai Alpha extends DCL to support Thai processing in the fol- lowing: o Command line arguments o Parameters in command procedure o Equivalence names o Labels in GOTO and GOSUB statements o SUBROUTINE names and CALL statements o INQUIRE statements o READ/WRITE statements o MESSAGE/REPLY commands 2 OpenVMS/Thai Alpha Operating System, SPD 46.76.05 Version 7.2 Thai Date and Time Display Utilities such as DIRECTORY and MAIL in OpenVMS/Thai can display date and time in Thai format. Utilities OpenVMS/Thai Alpha provides the following utilities to support Thai processing in addition to the OpenVMS utilities: o Thai SORT/MERGE in addition to SORT/MERGE o Thai EDT in addition to EDT o Thai Print Symbiont in addition to Print Symbiont In addition to the above, Thai characters are also supported in the following utilities: o DEC TPU and EVE Editor o Mail o Phone o Reply Thai SORT/MERGE Thai SORT/MERGE is the Thai extended version of the OpenVMS SORT/MERGE utility. Word ordering rules defined by the Thai Dictionary, the Royal Institute edition, B.E. 2525 (1982) are supported. Thai EDT Thai EDT is an interactive Thai text editor that provides many text processing enhancements to EDT for Thai text processing. A callable interface is also provided for applications that require Thai text edit- ing capabilites. 3 OpenVMS/Thai Alpha Operating System, SPD 46.76.05 Version 7.2 Thai Print Symbionts Thai print symbionts support Thai combined character code TIS 988-2533 (1990) extension to Thai character code TIS 620-2533 (1990) and printer Identification Number scheme proposed by the NECTEC/TAPIC's "WTT Com- mon Specifications for Thai Application Development." The run-time library rou- tines perform a variety of Thai processing functions such as string manipulation, read/write operations, character conversion and other Thai processing operations. These routines can be called from programs written in any of the supported programming languages. Thai Printing Support Thai Printing Support for OpenVMS is provided by installing a sub-kit called THAIPS010 which is bundled with OpenVMS/Thai Alpha V7.2. It al- lows users to print high quality Thai text files and Thai PostScript files with Digital PostScript printers. ASSOCIATED PRODUCTS DECwindows Motif/Thai for OpenVMS/Thai Alpha Compaq offers a separately orderable layered product called DECwin- dows Motif/Thai for OpenVMS/Thai Alpha which provides support for OSF/MOTIF(R), a standards-based graphical user interface in both run-time and de- velopment environments.
