DIGITAL Software Product Description ___________________________________________________________________ PRODUCT NAME: DEC Commserver for OpenVMS, Version 3.0A SPD 33.21.04 DESCRIPTION DEC Commserver for OpenVMS offers application developers the tools nec- essary to allow user applications on OpenVMS (host) systems to com- municate with suitably configured DEC Commserver hardware (server) sys- tems via the Ethernet. The DEC Commserver for OpenVMS software package is composed of both host and server functional components. The components which run on the host include: An Application Interface Driver that implements the Simpact Asso- ciates, Inc. application programming interface (API) A host transport driver that interfaces to the system's Ethernet Driver Configuration and management drivers The components within DEC Commserver for OpenVMS which run on the server include: A Commserver transport driver A transfer application Management and device processes The VAXELN Operating System Communications protocols November 1995 AE-PEAJE-TE Features Transparency The DEC Commserver's application interface driver provides an API that is similar to that used by Simpact Associates Inc.'s ICP3222 I/O driver software. This similarity permits customers to use their newly developed (or ex- isting) Simpact-based applications as if the Simpact hardware (ICP3222) were installed directly in the host, even though the I/O interface is actually installed within DEC Commserver hardware unit(s) attached to the Ethernet. Application programs are able to perform $QIO requests to the DEC Commserver's application interface driver and have the calls and replies transported to and from the server. Flexibility DEC Commserver for OpenVMS can be configured to interface with mul- tiple servers and, conversely, servers can be configured to interface with multiple hosts. Any combination of host and server connections can be made up to a maximum configuration of 31 hosts and/or 31 servers on a single local area network (LAN). When data transfer security is paramount, a DEC Commserver may be phys- ically configured in a single, private connection to one particular host Ethernet adapter. This configuration does not allow access from any other hosts. Users must strictly follow configuration and performance guidelines, since the total number of communications lines supported is a func- tion of line speeds, line utilization and protocol processing loads. Supportability Simpact Associates, Inc. software protocols for the DEC Commserver are supported by Digital when purchased with the DEC Commserver for Open- VMS software. Multiplicity 2 A variety of communications protocols are available with DEC Commserver for OpenVMS. The following protocols from Simpact Associates, Inc. are currently available: 3 DEC Commserver X.25 (1984) for ICP3222 This protocol implements the October 1984 CCITT X.25 LAPB protocol and is certified for Telenet[R], TYMNET[R], and the Defense Data Network. It also provides optional support for the ISO 7776 and ISO 8208 in- ternational standards. Maximum line speed: using four simultaneous lines is 256 Kbps; using two lines is 500 Kbps; using one line is 1000 Kbps. DEC Commserver BSC 2780/3780 for ICP3222 This protocol connects non-IBM[R] systems to traditional IBM comput- ing environments, performing point-to-point file transfer. This software conforms to the standard industry practice outlined in the IBM document General Information - Binary Synchronous Communica- tions (GA27-3004). Maximum line speed: using sixteen simultaneous lines is 4.8 Kbps; us- ing eight lines is 9.6 Kbps; using four lines is 19.2 Kbps; using two lines is 38.4 Kbps; using one line is 56 Kbps. DEC Commserver BSC 3270 for ICP3222 This protocol connects systems to IBM 3270 display devices within a multi-drop network. Each link can be configured as a 3270 control sta- tion (similar to an IBM 3705) or tributary station (similar to an IBM 3274). This software conforms to the standard industry practices outlined in the IBM documents General Information - Binary Synchronous Communi- cations (GA27-3004) and 3274 Control Unit Description and Programmer's Guide (GA23-0061). Maximum line speed: using sixteen simultaneous lines is 19.2 Kbps; us- ing four simultaneous lines is 56 Kbps. DEC Commserver S.W.I.F.T. & CHIPS for ICP3222 4 This protocol allows host applications to communicate with both the S.W.I.F.T. Regional Processor and the New York Clearing House. A safe- store feature ensures integrity of financial data. Maximum line speed: using four simultaneous lines is 64 Kbps. Performance DEC Commserver for OpenVMS performance is measured in terms of the per- formance of the individual components. In particular, customers must be aware of the performance restrictions of the communications devices being used. Simpact's ICP3222/EXC3212 modules are capable of supporting line speeds up to 64 Kbps, or 1000 Kbps, respectively, depending on the communi- cations processor type and protocol combination. However, the anticipated performance of any individual communications line must consider data throughput needs, the protocol(s) used, the number of communications lines per DEC Commserver system, and the den- sity of traffic on the Ethernet. Line speed equal rated line speed. Line speed and throughput do not have the same meaning. Throughput is always significantly less than line speed. For maximum throughput, contact your local Digital office for proper configuration. STANDARDS SUPPORTED The DEC Commserver for OpenVMS product conforms to industry specifi- cations for communications protocols as indicated with the descrip- tion of each protocol above. INSTALLATION Digital recommends that a customer's first purchase of this software product include Digital Installation Services. These services provide for installation of the software product by an experienced Digital Soft- ware Specialist. 5 For subsequent purchases of this product only experienced customers should attempt installation. Digital recommends that all other cus- tomers purchase Digital's Installation Services. Before installation of the software the customer must: Previously have installed all requisite software and hardware in- cluding terminals; Make available for a reasonable period of time, as mutually agreed by Digital and the customer, all hardware, communications facil- ities and terminals that are to be used during installation; Obtain, install and demonstrate as operational any modems and other equipment and facilities necessary to interface with the DEC Comm- server product. For more information about Digital's licensing terms and policies, contact your local Dig- ital office. Simpact Associates protocol software is included in the DEC Commserver for OpenVMS media. Customers may use these protocols by ordering soft- ware licenses as described in the ORDERING INFORMATION section of this SPD. License Management Facility Support This layered product supports the OpenVMS License Management Facil- ity. License units for this product are allocated on a Unlimited System Use plus Personal Use basis. This layered product offers a Personal Use license. Each Personal Use license allows one identified OpenVMS Host to use the DEC Commserver for OpenVMS layered product. Protocol licenses allow one identified DEC Commserver unit to run the protocol on any number of Communications Processor boards within the unit. CLUSTER ENVIRONMENT This layered product is fully supported when installed on any valid and licensed VMScluster* configuration without restrictions.
