Compaq Software Product Description ___________________________________________________________________ PRODUCT NAME: Compaq SNA Peer Server, Version 1.5 SPD 51.08.06 DESCRIPTION The Compaq SNA Peer Server is a member of Compaq Computer Corporation's family of SNA transport products. This family consists of hardware and software products that connect suitably configured Compaq networked systems and IBM systems in a Systems Network Architecture (SNA) en- vironment. The Compaq SNA Peer Server is a layered software product that offers peer connectivity between IBM systems and applications and Compaq sys- tems and applications through its support for SNA Node Type 2.1 (LEN Node) protocols. The Peer Server is supported on Alpha workstations or servers running the Tru64 UNIX (formerly DIGITAL UNIX) operating system. Refer to the Tru64 UNIX Software Product Description (SPD 70.70.xx) for supported processors. The Compaq SNA Peer Server connects to the IBM SNA environment via SDLC, LLC2, or QLLC data link protocols supporting wide area network (WAN) and local area network (LAN) access. Non-SNA network access is via TCP/IP and/or DECnet-Plus (DECnet/OSI); consult the latest Tru64 UNIX and DECnet- Plus SPDs for comprehensive media/device support lists. The Compaq SNA Peer Server allows OpenVMS, ULTRIX, Tru64 UNIX, MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows, IBM OS/2, and Macintosh based applications to com- municate with applications running on systems in both Subarea and APPN (Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking) SNA networks. A built-in TN3270E Server capability provides remote TN3270 clients with interactive Tel- net access to the host system and printing support without requiring the installation of TCP/IP on the mainframe. September 1999 AE-Q1PCG-TE SNA WAN Access WAN access is provided via SDLC leased or switched lines or X.25 packet switched links. SDLC is supported on the DEC 3000 family through either one or more Compaq WANcontroller 720 TURBOchannel synchronous adapters or the built- in serial communication controller port (SCC) present on DEC 3000 sys- tems. SDLC is supported on Compaq EISA-based systems (AlphaServer 2100) Server family through one or more Compaq EISA Synchronous Communications Con- trollers (DNSES). SDLC is supported on Compaq ISA-based systems (AlphaServer 200 sys- tems) through one or more Compaq ISA/Synchronous Communications Con- trollers (PBXDI**). SDLC is supported on Compaq PCI-based systems through one or more DIG- ITAL PCI/Synchronous Communications Controllers (PBXDP**). X.25 access is supported via local synchronous or X.25 gateway LAN ac- cess (X.25 Relay) using the Compaq Wide Area Networking for Tru64 UNIX product, previously known as X.25 for DIGITAL UNIX Systems. (See the OPTIONAL SOFTWARE section of this SPD.) SNA LAN Access LLC2 LAN support is provided for Token Ring, CSMA-CD, and FDDI access. Token Ring is supported through one or more PCI Token Ring adapters (PBXNP**) on Compaq PCI-based systems, Compaq TRNcontroller 700 TUR- BOchannel Token Ring Interface devices on TURBOchannel based Alpha sys- tems, by the DW300/DT424 Token Ring Communications Controller on EISA- based Alpha systems. All Alpha systems support Ethernet/CSMA-CD in- terfaces (check the Compaq Systems and Options Catalog for Ethernet interface type(s) supported on specific processors). This product supports Compaq's ISO 9341 (FDDI) devices for use with the LLC2 protocol. Refer to the Tru64 UNIX operating system SPD 70.70.xx for the various FDDI devices supported. 2 Note: SNA network connections via CSMA-CD support standard Ethernet 802.3 only (not Ethernet V2). Features Features of the Compaq SNA Peer Server include: o SNA wide area (WAN) connectivity to the SNA environment via SDLC links or packet switched (X.25) networks. o SNA LAN connectivity to the SNA environment via Token Ring, Eth- ernet, or FDDI. o Node Type 2.1 (APPN LEN node) support. o Local and remote client connectivity between TCP/IP and DECnet-Plus environments to IBM mainframe, AS/400, PS/2 systems. o Supports up to 10,000 concurrent LU sessions. The maximum concur- rent session count is limited by the specific software license pur- chased (LMF PAK). o Layered software product on Alpha systems running the Tru64 UNIX operating system. o Compatible with most Compaq supplied client software. Refer to the SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS section for availability and required ver- sions of optional software. o On-demand non-SNA network client application startup. (Supports SNA session startup when initiated from the adjacent SNA node.) o Supports the synchronous communication speeds (SDLC) listed in the following table: ________________________________________________________________ Maximum Sync Device________Speed___________Bus_______________________________ SCC 19.2 Kb/s TURBOchannel DSYT1 E1T1 TURBOchannel 3 ______________Maximum_Sync______________________________________ Device________Speed___________Bus_______________________________ DNSES E1T1 EISA PBXDI E1T1 ISA PBXDP_________E1T1____________PCI_______________________________ o Managed from the DIGITAL management director (DIGITAL CMIP). o TN3270E Server capability includes support for RFC 1647, which pro- vides the ability to print files to locally attached printers. o SDLC multiple secondary station support. o Supports Primary Dependent LU sessions in cooperation with DIGI- TAL SNA 3270 Application Services. Components The Compaq SNA Peer Server consists of the Peer Server software, a Con- figuration Utility, Peer Server management software, and device drivers. The Peer Server software installs on a Tru64 UNIX system. Various pa- rameters are configured upon startup using information generated from the Configuration Utility. The Peer Server can be managed and monitored either locally or remotely using NCL or CMIP and the Common Trace Facility (CTF). Configuration Utility After the Peer Server installation is complete, it is configured us- ing the supplied Configuration Utility. The Peer Server Configuration Utility creates a startup script that the Peer Server in turn reads when it starts. The script file contains the commands necessary to cre- ate the various Peer Server management entities (such as DLC links and stations, logical units, and access names). The Configuration Utility allows Peer Server managers to save answers and to modify discrete parts of the configuration. Server Management 4 The Peer Server is managed with a DIGITAL CMIP director (such as the DIGITAL Network Control Language (NCL) utility). The management soft- ware components can be installed either on the same system as the Peer Server or optionally installed and run on a separate UNIX system. The Common Trace Facility (CTF) can be used to trace data exchanges at the TG level, LU/Session level, or DLC link level. Data can be an- alyzed live or saved to a file for later analysis. Client Software When used with appropriate client software, users can access appli- cations and data, transfer files, exchange information, and transfer print jobs between the two environments. Refer to the OPTIONAL SOFTWARE section for availability and required versions of optional software.
