Software Product Description ___________________________________________________________________ PRODUCT NAME: HP OpenVMS Common Internet File System V1.0 SPD 82.42.01 DESCRIPTION This software product description explains the HP OpenVMS Common In- ternet File System (CIFS) for OpenVMS Alpha and OpenVMS Integrity servers. HP OpenVMS Common Internet File System (CIFS) provides users with seam- less file and print interoperability between OpenVMS and Windows-based clients. The OpenVMS file and print services are based on the popu- lar open source product, Samba, from Samba.org. The software runs on OpenVMS Alpha and OpenVMS Integrity server platforms. It is similar to implementations that are in place today supporting Linux and UNIX operating environments. Use of the Common Internet File System requires OpenVMS Version 8.2 or later for AlphaServers and OpenVMS V8.2-1 or later for Integrity server systems. CIFS supports Windows 2000 and later clients. FEATURES Domain Support HP CIFS can act as a Member Server of a Windows 200x Active Directory domain. HP CIFS can act as a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) in its own domain, but cannot act as a PDC in a Windows domain. HP CIFS is compatible with LDAP enabled PDCs (Primary Domain Controllers) both as BDC (Backup Domain Controller) as well as a Member server. December 2007 Browser Services Network browser services are provided for by CIFS. Cluster Services HP CIFS can be installed on any node in an OpenVMS Clusters. OpenVMS Cluster configurations are fully described in the Software Product De- scription for HP OpenVMS Cluster Software (SPD 29.78.xx). CIFS for Open- VMS can run on members of an OpenVMS Cluster that are running Open- VMS Alpha Version 8.2 or later or OpenVMS Integrity Version 8.2-1 or later. Mixed-version clusters are supported if all cluster members upon which the CIFS for OpenVMS runs are running OpenVMS Version 8.3 or later. For more information, refer to the OpenVMS release notes for the lat- est Alpha or Integrity server version you are running. CIFS supports simultaneous file access by all nodes running CIFS in the cluster. A central event log, central CIFS accounts, and share databases are main- tained in a cluster. File Services HP OpenVMS CIFS provides clients with a remote file system that ap- pears as a transparent extension of the client systems' local comput- ing environment. CIFS allows users to share OpenVMS and Microsoft files with simultaneous access and sharing of files between Windows and Open- VMS. Users can use discretionary access controls on each file and di- rectory to specify the groups and users that can access files, to de- fine the levels of access that each group or user is permitted, and to control auditing supported by Windows security. Additional, optional security is provided by OpenVMS file and directory protections. Extended File Specifications based on ODS-2 and ODS-5 are both sup- ported. This includes support for deep directories and extended file names. Both DFS and NFS mounted disks can be served. 2 Printing Services Users can share printers connected to both AlphaServer and Integrity server systems or OpenVMS Cluster systems, as well as network-based printers such as LAT printers and PrintServers. Print shares are sup- ported in local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) envi- ronments. PC clients can print files from their desktop operating sys- tems as well as from PC applications. Multiple print shares may also be defined for a single printer. In addition, OpenVMS printer queue functionality is provided. HP CIFS supports raw, text, NT style and all PostScript(DCPS) print- ers supported by OpenVMS. Selected PostScript printers may need the DECprint Supervisor for OpenVMS (DCPS) software to provide access through the OpenVMS queuing system over TCP/IP. The HP DECprint Supervisor for OpenVMS (DCPS) product provides PostScript and DEC ANSI printing to selected industry-standard PostScript printers. Network Transports CIFS utilizes the industry standard TCP/IP protocol running on the host server. This allows an OpenVMS host system to interact with a Microsoft Windows client or server to provide remote file, print, and authen- tication services. CIFS provides remote access to numerous computers at the same time. This Common Internet File System runs over TCP/IP by using the SMB (Server Message Block) protocol found in Microsoft Windows for file and printer access. CIFS supports the TCP/IP network transport software. One or more trans- port stacks can work concurrently. CIFS has been developed to work in close harmony with the HP OpenVMS TCP/IP Services product. Third party TCP/IP solutions that interoperate with the HP OpenVMS Operating sys- tem will be supported on a best case basis. Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS) is supported with interface to LMHOSTS file and WINS and DNS NETBIOS name resolution. 3 Security HP CIFS provides an extension to the Windows model by supporting Open- VMS security as an optional enhancement. It also provides external au- thentication, trust relationship support and the mapping of OpenVMS ACLs to CIFS ACLs. HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS Processors Supported All AlphaServer systems supported by OpenVMS Alpha Version 8.2 or later are supported by HP CIFS for OpenVMS Alpha. All Integrity server sys- tems supported by OpenVMS Version 8.2-1 or later are supported by HP CIFS for OpenVMS Integrity. OPTIONAL HARDWARE PostScript Printers HP CIFS supports all PostScript printers supported by HP OpenVMS. Se- lected PostScript printers may need the HP DECprint Supervisor for Open- VMS (DCPS) software to provide access through the OpenVMS queuing sys- tem over TCP/IP or DECnet. Refer to the HP DCPS Software Product De- scription (SPD 44.15.xx) for a complete list of PostScript printers supported by HP OpenVMS. Network Interface Controllers For the TCP/IP transport, CIFS supports the network hardware devices supported by the specific TCP/IP product. Refer to the Software Prod- uct Description for HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS (SPD 46.46.xx). For information about what software versions of HP TCP/IP for OpenVMS are supported, see the section SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS. For information about other TCP/IP products, contact the vendor. 4 SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS Operating System The software requirements for HP CIFS for OpenVMS Integrity Version V1.0 are: o HP OpenVMS Integrity Operating System Version 8.2-1 or higher The software requirements for HP CIFS for OpenVMS Alpha Version V1.0 are: o HP OpenVMS Alpha Operating System Version 8.2 or higher The software requirements for HP CIFS in support of Microsoft are Win- dows 200 and later clients. Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows-NT are not supported. Network Transport Software CIFS is to be used in a TCP/IP environment. HP OpenVMS TCP/IP soft- ware is recommended. This software must be purchased separately for OpenVMS Alpha, but is included in the Foundation Operating Environment (FOE) for HP OpenVMS Integrity servers. Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS) is supported with inter- face to LMHOSTS file and WINS and DNS NETBIOS name resolution. GROWTH CONSIDERATIONS The minimum hardware and software requirements for any future version of this product may be different from the requirements for the cur- rent version. 5 SOFTWARE LICENSING HP CIFS is provided at no additional charge for users with a valid li- cense to operate an OpenVMS operating system for an Integrity server or AlphaServer system. The SAMBA technology utilized in CIFS is bound by an open source soft- ware license. License Management Facility Support HP CIFS may be used without an LMF PAK.
