Collector creates several projects with his OpenVMS systems

Currently I am more of a collector than anything. I've been gathering machines for several projects which are still under research. The closest one to birth is a family Web site.

Powered by a cluster of two AlphaServer 800 systems, it is intended as a gathering place for the children of my paternal grandparents and their descendants. Eventually, I envision a portal with discussion groups, newsletters, photo sections, and genealogy for the various family branches.

The next project on the list is a cluster of two AlphaServer 1200 systems. They will be used for database work. I am an Oracle database administrator in real life (besides an OpenVMS system manager), so I intend to install the various versions of Oracle on these systems for practice and learning. In addition, they will run MySQL and OpenIngres (when available) and be used as general database servers.

The personal Web server will be used for development work in converting and porting Open Source applications to the OpenVMS platform. Along these lines I am also considering some sort of SourceForge-like site to promote the porting and writing of Open Source OpenVMS applications and utilities.

I want to say that I am very grateful for the availability of the OpenVMS Hobbyist Program since it allows me to create these projects in a much friendlier, safer, and robust environment than would be possible otherwise.
