Seeking help with MAIL subdirectory?

The Question is:

 
I was able to create a mail directory "mail.dir" in my directory and have all
of my mail files "*.mai" automatically go into my "mail.dir" directory.
I can't remember the steps that I took to get that to happen.  Can you help
me out?!?  Thanks!
