Alpha XL hardware compatibility?

» close window

The Question is:

I recently purchased a used Alpha XL 233 intending to run
Open VMS on the machine. To my chagrin I found that this
is not possible. I understant Open VMS will run on an
AlphaStation or AlphaServer. What parts from my machine
could I swap into a bare low-end AlphaStation or Server?
Or where could I find out this info?

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

The Answer is :

The Alpha XL series is not supported by OpenVMS -- those systems were
intended for use with Windows NT.

What parts you can swap into the AlphaStation or AlphaServer very much
depend on what parts you have installed in the system. Various RZ, RRD,
TZ, and TL SCSI widgets can be usually be swapped over. Memory may or
may not be swappable, depending on the specific systems involved.

For information on the specific parts that are supported by the OpenVMS
operating system, please see the OpenVMS Software Product Description
(SPD). For pointers to the available resources and hardware-oriented
websites, please see the OpenVMS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
