reading BACKUP saveset on UNIX?

» close window

The Question is:

I have an old Vax/VMS saveset on an 8mm tape, but we no longer have an 8mm
drive connected to our vaxes.
We do have a SUN Sparcstation with an exabyte 8mm drive running solaris 5.6.

We were hoping to use the sun 8mm drive to "dump" the saveset
file onto its disk and then do a network copy to our vaxes.

doing command similar to either of the following results in errors:
   dd if=/dev/rmt/0n ibs=8192 cbs=8192 of=x.x
           or
   cpio -civt < /dev/rmt/0

Do any of you vms gurus have any idea/com files/pointers that might help?
Thanks
Rob

The Answer is :

Tools to read BACKUP savesets on various platforms are available from
third-party vendors. (Some may be freeware or shareware.)

It would likely be easiest to locate an OpenVMS system with an 8mm drive,
or to transfer the existing 8mm drive to an OpenVMS system, and read the
  saveset there.
