HP OpenVMS Systemsask the wizard |
The Question is: I have acquired a VAXstation 3100 Model 42, and I was wondering if it was possible to boot this system over a terminal connected to one of the serial ports instead of a monitor. Any help would be greatly appreciated! The Answer is : The Wizard is unaware of a VAXstation 3100 model 42 system. On the VAXstation 3100 models 30, 40, 38, 48, and 76 systems, it is possible to control and display the progress of the bootstrap over a serial line using the alternate console capability, rather than using the workstation display. On all VAXstation 3100 systems, a slide switch labeled S3 is available on the back of the system. (On the earliest of the early VAXstation 3100 models 30 and 40 systems, there is no cut-out over the switch in the enclosure, and the S3 switch is thus accessable only from within the enclosure. The S3 switch is located on the back of the VAXstation 3100 enclosure, between the communications port modified modular jack (MMJ) and the diagnostic LEDs -- the communications port is the MMJ port with the double-arrow glyph, and not the MMJ port with the printer glyph.) Shut down and power off the system, and all storage enclosures. S3 downward is the normal position. Use a pen or other non-metalic and non-conductive object to switch it upward. (Do not use a pencil, as the graphite in the pencil can potentially damage the switch.) With S3 upwards, the console is now the printer port, the port with the printer glyph. For information on the modular jack pinout, please see the OpenVMS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Also please see the pointers to various available MicroVAX and VAXstation websites that are listed in the OpenVMS FAQ. Also see the section "VAX5. Tell me about the system disk size limit on the VAXstation 3100." in the OpenVMS FAQ.
