The Question is: I have a customer who is using OpenVMS on the Alpha station. He wants to transfer information to other Client-Server platforms (UNIX, NT) but his only means of exporting the data from the application is via tape. Is there a tape emulation product that will allow my customer to generate a data-file from a "tape device", which can then be ftp'ed to other servers on his network? Thanks for the assistance..... The Answer is : You will need to investigate the specifics of the application, in order to determine what sorts of options are available. Please contact the vendor that is supporting the application for further assistance. Depending on the application, it may be possible to redirect the operations to a disk file. It may also be possible to alter an existing software package -- such as the DECUS VDDRIVER tool -- to directly emulate a tape, using a disk file. At worst, the contents of the tapes could be read back in by various standard OpenVMS tools, and then transfered to the remote systems for processing.
