The Question is: Prior to deploying a new Alpha, we would like your opinion on write caching/Raid 5 options for a production data drive... 1) If the power fails, as well as the battery for the controller, can files become "corrupted", i.e. the header and index do not match the data rendering the file unusable? If so, are there any utilities to "fix" the file to a usable format? 2) If the battery is installed in the controller, what possible events can cause the write cache operations to not complete? As you can see, I am somewhat hesitant to install write caching on a production drive, however, without it our application is suffering from I/O overhead... Any other ideas or suggestions? Your feedback is much appreciated. RFox, VP IT, Quartet Manufacturing The Answer is : Acquire a RAID Array subsystem with dual redundant controllers such as the RA450 (FWD) or RA7000 (UltraD) -- with this configuration, the failure of a controller or battery will cause the other controller to take over and complete the transaction.
