The Question is: I use a rather old OpenVMS version : 5.4-1. Within an application I receive the message : "page file badly fragmented" which causes the application to crash. Is there a possibility ( program ? ) to fix this problem ? I found a defragmentation program (offered by raxco company) named "perfectdisk" which I would like to try but it works with higher VMS versions only. My question: Is this product suitable for the problem ? If it is, how can I puchase an upgrade for my operating system to max 6.1 ( on higher versions my (very old) application won4t run) If it is not, what other possibilities do I have ? The problem is urgent, because the uVAX 3100 is used as a control system on a water treatment plant and our customer needs his data. thank you very much. regards ingrid mott The Answer is : The Wizard strongly encourages you to post the entire error message, as "page file badly fragmented" is not a standard OpenVMS message. The Wizard suspects the full error message is: %SYSTEM-W-PAGEFRAG, Pagefile badly fragmented, system continuing Having a badly fragmented pagefile does not directly cause applications to crash and is not directly related to disk fragmentation, it tends to indicate that the amount of pagefile storage that has been allocated is insufficient, or that there is heavy pagefaulting activity (often as a result of improper settings in MODPARAMS, failure to AUTOGEN, and/or insufficient working set settings). The situations that trigger this warning can result from an increasing workload, from a pagefile leak, from an insufficent amount of swapfile space (as the pagefile is used when room runs out in the swapfile), from insufficient process quotas or SYSGEN settings, from insufficient system physical memory, or from various other potential causes. Increase the size of the pagefile, using the SYSGEN CREATE command or the SWAPFILES command procedure. This may require you to use BACKUP or other tool to defragment the system disk, as there are limits on the number of file extents supported for a pagefile. (The Wizard would recommend performing a standalone image BACKUP of the system disk followed by a disk restoration, so that you have a known good copy of the system disk and so that you have defragmented the system disk.) The Wizard would generally recommend creating several similarly-sized pagefiles -- rather than one big file -- and spreading the pagefiles out across multiple disk spindles. Urgent problems should be routed to the applicable customer support center, and not to the OpenVMS Wizard. If this system is a critical system, the Wizard would also strongly encourage a system upgrade to a supported OpenVMS version (such as V5.5-2, V6.2, or V7.1).
