The Question is: I am trying to re-use some DLT III cartridges which were originally initialized and used in a TZ87 drive. I am trying to re-init them in a TF85 drive. Most of the cartridges are coming up with "parity error" on init. Trying to MOUNT results in "not labled". I've re initialized (/media=compact,/media=nocompact) them in the TZ87 successfully and can write to them (backup/copy) but when moving to the TF85, I still get "parity errors" on attempting to init them. I've tried to use a "bulk eraser" (eg, strong magnetic field) to erase them, no help. The TZ87 is in a BA350 shelf, connected to an Alpha8400 running OpenVMS 6.2. The TF85 is connected to a Vax4500, OpenVMS 6.2. Is there some way to re-use/re-init these tapes so that they can be used in the TF85? The Answer is : The DLT drives can reinitialize any DLT cassette up to the maximum density supported by the drive -- the TZ85 and TZ86 cannot reinitialize higher-density tapes. The Wizard would also suggest trying a stronger bulk degausser. Topics specific to unintential initialization or the overwriting of disk and tape media include (1286) and (6990).
