The Question is: I wish to establish tcp/ip over a ppp connection between a vax/vms server's asynchronous port (rs232) and a client pc's serial port (com1). The connection is direct (null modem). I've been trying to do that with another product called MULTINET, but the solution offered by this software isn't very stable. Do you know if ucx may give be a good solution for what i need ? I'm using vms 5.5-2. Thanks, avner ziv. The Answer is : You will require an upgrade, as OpenVMS VAX V5.5-2 is far too old to support PPP (OpenVMS Alpha V7.1 and a current IP package is the typical setup), or you will need to consider using a PPP or SLIP-capable DECserver to establish the IP connection for you from a local area network. With a direct and local network connection such as that proposed here, use of ThinWire or other Ethernet technology would be a more appropriate (and more easily available) connection. Various PC Ethernet cards are available circa US$20, and the cabling and connections will add at most another US$20 to the cost. The resulting IP connection will be available to you on your OpenVMS VAX V5.5-2 system (with TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS (UCX) installed), and will be *far* faster than any serial link could be.
