The Question is: I have 2 questions that relate to a particular problem I have on an AlphaStation 200. I have just upgraded this machine to V7.1 and it has booted up ok. Somehow I cannot activate the DECterm option. I have tried, double clicking the icon, help menu but still no result. I need to get to the '$' prompt to upgrade the layered products on the system and to config the networking. Would you be kind enough to help. The other ? is now that I can't get to the '$' prompt, I was going to scrap the upgrade and restore to start again. The problem is I can not get to the '>>>' (boot prompt). I have tried all sorts of key combinations such as...ctrl p, F6, F10, ctrl y..etc. and still no joy. Why is this the case. Have you come across such, or if you have any tips, I would very much appreciate it. Thankyou. The Answer is : Boot minimally, per directions in the OpenVMS FAQ and in the OpenVMS documentation set, and log in on the console. Alternatively, set up a serial console (most of these systems have an environment variable "console" that can be set to "serial" or "graphics") and use a serial terminal as the console. (There are other discussions of setting up serial alternate consoles here in Ask The Wizard.) As an alternative, see if you can use DECwindows Motif -- see the options during the login box -- to log in and try to create a DECterm. (This assumes that you are using DECwindows V1.2-4 or later, and CDE.) When upgrading, also determine if you need to install the Open3D kit for your particular graphics controller and version, and make sure you install the available DECwindows ECO kit for the version of DECwindows in use. On the AlphaStation 200 and 255, the reset button on the front panel can be configured wired as a halt interrupt instead. This is documented in the user's manual. On the AlphaStation 200, jumper pins 2-3 on J3 to select halt as the default behaviour instead of reset (pins 1-2, if memory serves). On the AlphaStation 255, switch 4 on the switchpack on is the default (reset), set it to off to select halt via the front panel.
